SUMMARY:Knitting and Crochet Group
DESCRIPTION:Knitting and Crochet Group is a drop in monthly time to learn a new skill or just to bring whatever knit or crochet project you have in progress. This is not a drop off class. Parents are encouraged to stay and participate\, but if you are unable to stay\, you may arrange with another parent to chaperone or participate in your place. \nMrs. Pineda would love to help you reach your knitting and crochet goals by teaching skills in small projects to learn the techniques you need to succeed. There may be dates for which she will have a special optional project in mind\, such as learning to dye natural yarn\, a spinning or weaving demonstration\, felting with wool\, or perhaps a field trip to an alpaca or sheep farm should the opportunity arise. \nThis year she has decided to try having enrollment so she can plan ahead based on how large the group is. Are you interested? Sign up\, or if you have questions\, contact Susan Pineda. Thank you.

SUMMARY:Build a Buckyball Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What: STEM Field trip to the UCSB Materials Research Lab.  This workshop is especially for you if you are studying chemistry.  Personally\, we are studying biology this year\, and we are going to do this workshop after learning about the carbon cycle. \nCost: Free \nWho: K-12 and parents\, but please read all the information provided to be sure this is a good fit for your student.  I was told by the education director that this workshop is best for upper elementary and middle school.  The younger elementary students (K-2nd) might have a hard time building the model and will need help from a parent or older student.  She also suggested that it may be too simple for the High Schoolers\, but as long as everyone is willing to to participate and help younger ones as needed without getting frustrated\, all K-12 students are welcome.  Please do not bring children younger than kindergarten.  If you need to bring babies or preschoolers\, you may take them for a walk around the campus while the older kids are in the workshop. \nWhen: The workshop starts at 10am.  I would like for you to be there at 9:50 to check in with me.  Please give yourself enough time to park\, walk\, and locate the room where our workshop is taking place. \nWhere: Materials Research Laboratory at UC Santa Barbara room 2048.  Click here for an interactive map http://mapdev.geog.ucsb.edu/#   \nThe lab is near the east gate at UCSB.  The closest parking is in Lot 10–there are coastal access parking spots on the first level of the structure that you can purchase hourly permits for (the permit dispenser is near the stairs). There are also visitor spots available in several other lots on campus.  Parking permit info: http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/parking-permits/short-term-parking-rates \nWhat is a Buckyball? \nSince 2004\, the Education Programs staff at the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) has presented a “Build your own Buckyball” activity to school groups visiting the UCSB campus. The activity is based on a molecular model kit of the Carbon-60 molecule first developed by Sir Harry Kroto\, who shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of the Buckminsterfullerene (Buckyball)\, to provide K-12 students with a hands-on way to share in the discovery of the structure of this unique molecule. \nStudents\, ranging from elementary to early high school\, are given a brief PowerPoint introduction focused on Materials science and the scale of the nanometer\, different forms of carbon and the relationship between molecular structure and material properties.\nAs part of the workshop\, students build their own six-inch Buckyball models with instruction by UCSB graduate student volunteers. The workshop takes approximately one hour to complete.  https://www.mrl.ucsb.edu/education/build-buckyball-workshop \nSign Up by January 16th\, after that you can ask to be added to the wait list.

SUMMARY:Of Winters Past... An English Country Dance Formal
DESCRIPTION:Of Winters Past… \nThis dance is a little different from the others hosted by ACHEV. For those of you who are new\, English Country Dance (ECD) is social\, or group dancing in sets or lines. The height of popularity was during the Regency Era\, but it is just as wonderful today as ever. To learn more about English Country Dancing in general\, visit the Santa Barbara Country Dance Society\, or sbcds.org. Below are some pictures from a movie based on Pride and Prejudice. \n    \nACHEV hosts this dance for the private homeschool community: ACHEV\, CASA\, SBCHI and TPCS students 6th grade and older\, including graduates\, and parents. Although helpful\, no prior experience necessary\, as dances will be taught and called. This dance requires some paying attention to learn and follow instructions in order for everyone to get the most enjoyment out of each dance. Mature and motivated students as young as ten may attend at the discretion of their parents.  \nGary Shapiro will be the Dance Master. Live music! \nSaturday\, January 26\, 7-10pm\nAt the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura\, located at 3451 Foothill Road in Ventura\n$15 per person ($30 family maximum); parent chaperones are free\nPlease bring a finger-food to share. Water provided. \nParents are encouraged to participate in this dance. Many do every year. Parents\, who chaperone\, attend for free. If you wish to invite a guest\, you need to contact Anita Schneider\, at schneiderab@verizon.net or text/call 805-490-0154\, in advance. Please remember it is your responsibility to carefully read dance notices to be sure your students and guests are prepared. \nAll dancers under 18 need a parent chaperone. If you are unable to stay\, please make arrangements for another responsible parent to chaperone in your place. (Parents\, if you do stay\, please consider dressing up and joining the dancing!) Also\, mature and motivated dancers as young as eleven years old are welcome as well. Parents\, you are responsible for deciding if your younger children are ready to participate. \nFormal Attire ~ Of Winters Past… is a time period formal event. Era costume will be admired\, but not required! Regency Era was the height of ECD\, but honestly\, any era from medieval forward works\, as ECD has been loved for centuries. That means Renaissance\, Regency\, colonial\, Victorian\, even 1900’s are all fair game! Just have fun with it. \nModest historical costumes are encouraged\, otherwise formalwear\, please\, such as vests and ties for the boys\, and long formal dresses for the girls. The ACHEV dress code for dances applies. Please visit and carefully read the full dress code: ECD Formal visual dress code. It includes examples of Regency Era attire as well as illustrations to clarify the minimum requirements of the dress code for dances. \nStudents arriving at the dance without proper attire will be asked to call a parent to bring suitable clothing or return home to change. Please be gracious in accepting the decision of the person in charge. \nFor period dress ideas\, watch a movie based on a Jane Austen novel (Pride and Prejudice\, Persuasion\, Sense and Sensibility\, Emma) and start visiting thrift stores. Some of the gowns from the movies are quite simple – have fun with it! Fabric stores often have historical sewing patterns\, if you are inclined to sew. \nTo volunteer\, please sign up here. Thanks! Of Winters Past 2019 volunteers \nFor inquiries\, please contact Anita Schneider at schneiderab@verizon.net. \n

SUMMARY:Support Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Greg and Susan Pineda are opening their home several third Friday nights throughout the year for support meetings on various topics\, some for all parents\, others just for the moms. Do you have a topic idea? Contact Susan Pineda. \nFor January 18\, I am planning a mother-daughter evening for fun with braids. I have experience with French and Dutch braids\, including variations. For her first English Country Dance formal\, I braided my daughter’s very long hair into a Dutch crown with accent braids. She is grown and I miss braiding her hair. If you would like to learn or share what you know\, I’d love to have you. Bring your own hairbrush\, comb\, hairbands and a few bobby pins. If we need extra help\, we can watch some YouTube instructions. I look forward to braiding your hair! \nThis could be a great chance to try out some up-do ideas before the Of Winters Past ECD Formal coming up January 26. \nAdded bonus – This might be a great night to bring dresses or gowns we have for loan. I have a few my daughter outgrew that I keep on hand to loan. Maybe we can even get some of our costumes ready for the dance. I have a few dresses that might work for some girls and moms. \nSince I have limited space\, I need you to sign up so I can be prepared with seating. SUMMARY:Volleyball Clinic
DESCRIPTION:Come for a fun time and mark PE off on your homeschooling checklist.   Mr. Adair is starting this clinic for ACHEV boys and girls (including his own kids) to learn how to play volleyball.   They will focus on learning the skills needed to play a game: serving\, passing\, setting\, and getting the ball over the net.  They will also learn the rules of the game\, how to rotate\, the roles of each position\, and eventually they will learn the position they are best suited for with their unique abilities. \nWho: ACHEV Boys and girls ages 10 and up. \nWhen: This is a weekly clinic.  We will take the week of Thanksgiving off\, and continue through Dec 14th before breaking for the holidays.  We will start back up January 18th in the new year.   I will keep it updated on the ACHEV calendar.  This is a drop-in clinic.  You do not need to sign up or rsvp\, just come as you are and when you are able.  However\, the kids will get more out of the instruction if they come consistently.  After we have been meeting for a little while\, we can get the kids formed into teams that play against each other.  If the kids want to\, we can keep track of wins/losses. \nIf you are interested in attending this clinic please enter your information on this Google Sheet.  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wFlGsHtYL9DpaNTg4Ibj0fuv3NYwh6BUE0JkKfNvlO4/edit#gid=0  I would like to have your email and cell phone number in case I need to contact you with reminders\, and make you aware of any changes or weather cancellations. \nParents and younger siblings are welcome to stay and watch\, go play on the playground\, relax\, etc.  You may drop your child/ren off as long as they will stay with the group\, but please let Kevin know that you are dropping off and make sure he has your contact information.  It would be nice to have at least one parent that is willing to help the kids with their drills\, keep score during the game\, etc.  It won’t be hard\, I promise. \nWe are excited about this clinic and hope to see the kids grow in physical stature\, have fun working as a team\, and enjoying some friendly competition.

DESCRIPTION:We have a fantastic opportunity lined up for ACHEV to explore music with the Music Van and special guests\, the Oxnard Music Advocacy Group (OMAG)! \nThe OMAG musicians are volunteers with the mission to introduce Ventura County youth to the world of orchestra and band music. Currently they tour Oxnard elementary schools every year\, offering assemblies and opportunities to try out instruments using the Music Van from the New West Symphony. The Music Van contains donated instruments students are allowed to hold and try. I am volunteering with this group this year as their flute and piccolo musician. This is the first time they have been invited by a homeschool group. Many of them area unfamiliar with home education\, so let’s give them the best reception and attention they have ever had! \nThis field trip is for all ages\, including parents. Students must be well behaved\, able to listen to and follow instructions\, and be careful with the instruments as they are expensive to repair. You may bring your children of all ages at your discretion\, but young children especially must be well behaved and well supervised. Thank you. \nDetails: \nWHEN: January 9\, 2018 at 9:30am. Please arrive a few minutes early so we can be settled in to start promptly. \nCOST: $5 per family for the field trip\, but if you feel moved to donate a little extra toward instrument maintenance\, they would definitely appreciate it! There will be a jar at the door for donations. Thank you. \nSIGN UP: Please sign up by January 4th. Space permitting\, you may be able to sign up after that\, or even just show up\, but without at least 15 students\, we will not be able to have this field trip. It is a lot of work to unload and reload the Music Van and the musicians are giving their precious time to us\, so we really want to fill the place for them. \nWHERE: Poinsettia Pavilion (3451 Foothill Rd\, Vta) in the Canada Larga room\, which is accessible from the upper level west parking lot that overlooks the ocean. We do not need to go into the foyer of the Poinsettia Pavilion\, but can go in through the door directly from the parking lot straight into the room. \nIDEAS: Plan ahead by studying a little about orchestra and band at home\, think of questions\, think about what instruments you might like to play someday\, consider bringing a little thank you note for OMAG. They love to hear from the students. Also\, currently OMAG does not have anyone to demonstrate violin or viola. Do you play? Would you like to help? Contact Susan Pineda at must_sew@yahoo.com. \nCONTACT: Susan Pineda at must_sew@yahoo.com or (805) 407-6851

SUMMARY:Support Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Greg and Susan Pineda are opening their home several third Friday nights throughout the year for support meetings on various topics\, some for all parents\, others just for the moms. Do you have a topic idea? Contact Susan Pineda. \nTonight’s meeting is just for the moms. We will be talking about women’s health issues. \nBeing a woman can be a bit of a roller coaster ride! Puberty\, child-bearing\, peri-menopause\, menopause – all these years and stages are important\, but can be daunting. We can learn from each other\, share our struggles\, our experience\, our triumphs\, and help each other through. Some of you who have been in ACHEV for a few years may remember I had to pretty much drop everything to recover from a women’s health issue from which I honestly had no idea if I could recover. Now that I am on the other side of the problem\, I am ready to share my story and what I learned from it both physically and spiritually. I pray you may learn something from my experience. I hope others will also share experiences and wisdom as well. We have much to learn from each other. \nWhether everything is going fantastic for you in the women’s health department\, or if you feel like everything is falling apart\, or somewhere in the middle\, please come. Come to listen\, share\, and encourage. There will be no judgement\, only support. \nPlease RSVP so I can have a comfy chair ready for you.

SUMMARY:Volleyball Clinic *** Cancelled Due to Weather & Fires ***

SUMMARY:Tidepooling Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun time exploring low tide at Carpinteria State Beach led by Mr. Panzer.  The lowest tide is about 3:30 pm\, so we will gather at 2pm and follow the tide out\, looking at things as they gradually get exposed.  We will also have a short “guide to tidepooling” talk about how to handle animals\,  how to look for animals\, what you might expect to see and so forth. \nWho: Everyone.  This field trip is for all ACHEV members and is appropriate for all ages \nCost: This field trip is free.  The only cost is parking if you choose to park in the State Beach/Campground parking lot\, for a daily rate of $10. \nA note about parking: The main reef is right out front of the main parking lot.  If you want to park for free\, and walk\, you can look around for free street parking.  There will probably be plenty of free street parking on Linden Ave  https://goo.gl/maps/AzVcmPtxeEm \nMeeting Spot: We will meet at the picnic area near the restrooms on the Palm Ave side of the campground parking lot. \nWhat to Wear: Dress in layers\, have jackets and hats/beanies/hoodies as the temperatures and wind may change.  No bare feet!  Wear rubber soled water shoes or old tennis shoes that can get wet. \nAdditional Info: There are lots of neat places to eat near the campground if we want to get dinner or a treat afterwards\, or maybe eat out for lunch before tidepooling. \nThere is a neat series of videos all about tidepools on Amazon and they are free to watch if you have Amazon Prime.  This might be a neat way to supplement the hands on educational experience: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B00YBDUYJO/ref=atv_hm_hom_2_c_obwan_2_1?ie=UTF8&pf_rd_i=home&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=3550443662&pf_rd_r=P1E2XMAZFAKDEHZS8N1S&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_t=12401 \nSign up using the Google Sheet linked below. \n

She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor.\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance. \nFor girls:\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by op ening up your circle. \nFor both:\nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations.\nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok.
