SUMMARY:Beach Day Carpinteria
DESCRIPTION:Join us for beach time at Carpinteria City Beach at the end of Linden Ave (near the intersection of Linden and Sandyland). It’s best to look for free street parking\, but there is paid parking in the campground where the bathrooms are. We will be meeting nearby the volleyball courts.  I will be there with my blue beach tent and my kids will have their body boards. We are bringing a picnic lunch\, but there is a neat little burger stand within walking distance from the beach called “The Spot”.  We will bring a volleyball for the big kids that want to play. \nNo need to RSVP\, but it would be nice to know you are coming. You can do that at the bottom of the page. Just one RSVP per family.

SUMMARY:Beach Day in Ventura
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Meet up at the beach for some fun playing in the sand\, volleyball\, swimming & kayaking at Harbor Cove Beach\, aka Mother’s Beach\, aka the “beach with no waves”.  This park is awesome for moms because it is protected by jetties from the waves.  It is easier to watch the little ones and let them play in the water.   The big kids can swim out really far with or without a boogie board\, explore the rocks\, and play beach volleyball on the sand courts.  We have a kid sized kayak that we bring to this beach\, it is also good for SUP if you happen to have one ( and if you do\, I want a turn!).    There are restroom and shower facilities here. \nWe will meet in the middle of the beach\, to the right of the blue beach carpet.  I will have my blue tent set up.  I have a 14 year old boy\, 11 year old girl\, a 3 year old girl (who is really scared of the water) and a 2 year old boy (who has yet to develop a healthy fear of the water).

SUMMARY:Prayer Evening
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in prayer Friday evening\, 6/7\, for the Garcia family. Joel and Ondreea Garcia joined ACHEV last year. We have enjoyed getting to know Ondreea and her daughters at park day. Ondreea shared the following heartbreaking need for prayer and support\, \n“Sadly\, my daughter-in-law took her own life. She left behind my son and 17 month old grandson. If you could share a prayer request for them\, it would mean a lot.” \nWhile we will dedicate the evening to prayer for the Garcia family\, there will be time to pray for whatever is burdening you. There is nothing too big or too small for God. Scripture tells us He wants us to bring everything to Him in prayer. Let us do that together. \nSo I can have enough chairs ready\, please let me know you are coming. ~ Susan Pineda (805) 407-6851 or must_sew@yahoo.com.

SUMMARY:Year End Resource and Clothing Exchange Party
DESCRIPTION:Time to go through your shelves\, bins and closets! Your outgrown resources and clothing might be exactly what another ACHEV family needs. Someone else may have exactly what you need! In fact\, you don’t have to bring anything to participate. You could just come for the play\, fellowship and shopping. \nWhile the kids browse or play at the park\, celebrate the end of the school year with fellowship\, sunshine and your wishlist for next year. We have timed it so hopefully you can collect some of what you need here\, then next month you can check out the used curriculum hall or the exhibit hall at the CHEA Convention. \nCity ordinance requires we exchange within our group. No sales to public\, but if people wander in to inquire\, be sure to share about home education and ACHEV. We’ve had some wonderful conversations with curious people over the years. Some have joined ACHEV. \nEvery year we have a free table for anything you don’t want to take home with you. This year\, Geneva Atchison is collecting resources to send to a Christian homeschool group in Kenya\, so I will have her pull out what they can use before donating the rest\, most likely to Abednego Book Shoppe in Ventura. \nCamino Real is a big park. Areas are first come\, first served\, so look for the ACHEV whiteboard easel and maybe a pop-up tent or play tipi. Last year we did well by the play structure near the tennis courts. \nSuggestions for what to bring: resources and/or clothing to sell or give\, camp chairs or blankets\, a folding table if you wish\, bags and/or boxes for shopping\, small bills for making change\, picnic lunch\, sunscreen\, outdoor play or sports equipment\, small pop-up tent. \nQuestions? Contact Susan Pineda at must_sew@yahoo.com or (805) 407-6851.

SUMMARY:Bird Museum Tour + Lab
DESCRIPTION:Come see the largest collections of birds’ eggs and nests in the world!! \nThe Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology (WFVZ) has more than a million specimens\, and a very large collection of bird study skins and mounts (nearly 70\,000).  Tours at the WFVZ are of our vast collection of avian (bird) materials that are primarily from the 1850s through 1950s. Tours are led by biologists and scientists who work at the museum. \nThese are the topics that will be covered during the tour: \n(1) The history of the collections and the scientific uses for them; how the materials are curated;\n(2) The diversity of birds of the world;\n(3)The relationship of birds to NGSS topics including natural selection and adaptation\, habitat\, and the impacts that humans have on wildlife;\n(4) Time for students to wander through the materials of the collections on their own! (A self-guided exercise can be provided to students during this portion of the tour if the teacher desires) \nAfter the tour\, students from 6th-12th grade and parents will go into a classroom for a hands on\, interactive lab called “What Bird is That?” with the scientists that work at the museum.  They will work with each other and the instructors on taxonomy\, learn about how DNA and modern science has changed how birds are classified\, and have the opportunity to get very hands on with some interesting specimens. \nWhile the middle & high school students are in the lab\, the younger students will be given additional time in the museum to complete a scavenger hunt\, do some sketching or coloring they will have art supplies available. \nWho: Everyone – only 6th grade and up will be permitted in the lab classroom.   Younger students will have an alternate activity in the museum. \nCost: $10 per student 6th grade & up\, $5 per student preschool and up\,  and $5 per adult.  Babies and toddlers free.

SUMMARY:ACHEV Fine & Performing Arts Festival 2019
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 4\, 2019 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm\n\n\n\n@ The Ventura Room\, Poinsettia Pavilion\nThe Arts Festival is a wonderful time for our students to share their God-given talents.  This is a non-judged activity\, designed to appreciate these talents of the homeschool community.  Due to time constraints\, we may need to limit the number of activities per person (i.e. 2 solo events) depending on how many entries we receive! \nWe’ve had an amazing response in the past with such creative entries as comedic skits\, dance\, bands\, mime\, poetry reading\, excerpts from plays\, films\, instrumental solos (piano\, guitar\, harp\, violin…)\, vocal solos\, photography\, drawings\, sewing\, knitting\, models and more.  This is also a great opportunity to recognize and encourage the hard work that goes into developing these life enriching skills. \nWe ask that all performing and fine art be appropriate for families with young children and glorifying to God. When our families come together as a group\, we hope to create an atmosphere that allows for consideration and grace. \nValues we trust every ACHEV family to embrace are: \n\n\nArtist/performer – Personal opinions and freedoms can and should at times be humbly set aside temporarily for the sake of the community. A good rule of thumb is if you have any concern it might offend\, chose something safer to perform/create/wear. Remember all ages may be present\, and ask yourself\, “Will it honor God?”\, and\, “Will it bless those who hear and see?” \n\n\nAudience – There is a time and place to graciously make allowances for the differing opinions about what is appropriate to perform/create/wear. Since this event serves our entire membership\, we can expect our diverse community to be just that: diverse. That is part of the beauty of community. We offer benefit of the doubt that each participant sincerely desires to honor God and bless those who hear and see. \n\n\nWe also believe constructive feedback is important. So please feel free to talk with leadership about any aspect of any ACHEV event or activity. Your input is valuable and appreciated. \n____________________________________________________________________________________________ \n\nParents are welcome to perform and/or display fine art as well!  We would really like to see 2 or 3 parents show off one of their talents as an encouragement for the students. \n\nWe are using Google Forms again this year.  Let us know if you have any questions about filling them out.  At the end of the form\, you can select to have a copy emailed to you.  If you choose to have a copy of your response emailed to you\, the email will contain a link allowing you to edit your response if need be.  You may not be able to edit your response without this link.  If you make a mistake we can also delete the old form and you can submit it again.  It does not take long to fill out. \nPlease fill out your submission forms no later than Friday\, April 26th.  We will not be accepting submissions after the deadline.  Please submit a separate form for each piece of artwork and each performance. \nVisual: \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfapEp4OqSyj4sf32wRqAIBi4CD3lg_2CaUPG2Xqdr86li9RA/viewform \nPerforming: \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSechrMXIEvezk2j-n9KjjoTVhwt6Hq3FYWFxk783yA4TtmSXA/viewform \nPlease drop off your fine art no later than Friday\, April 26th.\nCamarillo Art Drop Off: \nBonnie Adair \n174 Granada St\, Camarillo\, CA 93010 \nbonnieadair@verizon.net\, \n805-504-6457 \n  \nVentura Art Drop Off: \nAmy Tromans \n5265 Clemson Street\, Ventura\, CA 93003 \ndulceamymango@gmail.com \n805-701-1410 \n\nTo make this event happen\, we need all parents to volunteer.  We are asking every family to bring a plate of cookies/finger-snack to share AND to volunteer for one of  the jobs listed in the Google Form linked below.  We will contact you before the festival to let you know what your job will be.  Please select your top three choices. SUMMARY:Knitting and Crochet
DESCRIPTION:Knitting and Crochet Group is a drop in monthly time to learn a new skill or just to bring whatever knit or crochet project you have in progress. This is not a drop off class. Parents are encouraged to stay and participate\, but if you are unable to stay\, you may arrange with another parent to chaperone or participate in your place. \nMrs. Pineda would love to help you reach your knitting and crochet goals by teaching skills in small projects to learn the techniques you need to succeed. There may be dates for which she will have a special optional project in mind\, such as learning to dye natural yarn\, a spinning or weaving demonstration\, felting with wool\, or perhaps a field trip to an alpaca or sheep farm should the opportunity arise. \nThis year she has decided to try having enrollment so she can plan ahead based on how large the group is. Are you interested? Sign up\, or if you have questions\, contact Susan Pineda. Thank you.

SUMMARY:Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Garden’s school programs introduce children to the wonders of nature through interactive learning experiences. They hope to encourage a lifelong interest in plant science and ecology by fostering an appreciation and understanding of the natural world. \n\nDuring this 2 hour tour\, students have the opportunity to experience science first-hand in the Garden’s Plant Lab. Groups will have 30 minutes in an instructor-led lab to explore using our Zeiss microscopes\, models\, and dissecting equipment to view plant structures in a whole new light!  Outside of the lab\, our experienced docents will illuminate some of the amazing adaptations of our California native plants.  Each tour utilizes inquiry-based teaching methods to engage students with the natural world and inspire curiosity with their surroundings. \nThis field trip is for all ages.  Children will be divided into groups by age so that they can get the most out of the lab experience.  I estimate that we will have 9th-12th in their own group (if are you studying Biology\, this field trip is perfect for you!)\, mid- upper elementary and middle school together\, and the youngest kids (pk- 2) will be in their own small group.  If your child is too young to sit still and participate in the lab portion\, you are welcome to explore the garden just outside of the classroom while older students are participating in the lab.  You are also welcome to stay inside the classroom and watch\, but please be respectful and wait outside with your little ones if they become disruptive.  The walking tour is appropriate for all ages\, but keep in mind that the grounds are not stroller friendly (there are steps\, hills and rugged terrain in some areas) and you will need to carry babies and little kids if they get tired. \n\nLinks to educational resources\, including a downloadable wildflower coloring book : https://www.sbbg.org/learn-discover/school-programs/curriculum-resources \nCost: This field trip costs $125 for any group size up to 30 children.   So\, the more children we have participate\, the lower the cost per person.  I have personally paid for this in advance.  This is a new requirement they have due to the frequency of last minute cancellations.  I can only get my money back with 6 weeks’ notice. of cancellation.  I need to see that there is enough interest in this field trip well in advance\, so please do not wait until the last minute to sign up\, or it may get cancelled.  However\, please keep in mind that when you sign up\, you are expected to be there and make this a priority on your calendar.   You won’t want to miss this field trip anyways\, this is a wonderful place to visit and explore\, and they do a great job with the lab!   Considering the educational experience that is provided\, and their regular admission prices\, this is a really good deal. \nSign up on the Google Sheet linked below.  You only need to sign up students who will be participating.  Parents and babies/toddlers do not need to be signed up\, but I would appreciate knowing if you will have little ones tagging along.  If you want to bring an extra adult\, like Dad or a grandparent\, please check with me first.  We need to be mindful that our group size does not get too large.  They do not have limits on chaperones\, and we don’t want to give them a reason to make any new rules.

Thank you. \nDress Code for Dances \n(Please open the attached dress code with pictures\, and please ask if you have any questions.)     Sock Hop Visual Dress Code \nIn our desire to honor the Lord in all we say and do\, which includes how we dress and present ourselves\, ACHEV would like to set forth a dress code for our dances which focuses on modesty and practicality. We have taken into consideration that many dance steps are vigorous with girls twirling or being flipped upside down. Students arriving at dances without proper attire will be asked to call a parent to bring them suitable clothing or return home to change. Please be gracious in accepting the decision of the person in charge. \nBoys \n\nCollared shirts\, (t-shirts ok for this dance)\nSlacks\, (jeans ok for this dance )\n\nGirls  \n\nSkirts or dresses knee length or longer. (This means touching the top of the knee\, regardless of leggings.) If there is a lace overlay\, the skirt underneath (solid fabric) needs to touch the knee.\nLeggings or shorts are required if the skirt rises past the knees while twirling.\nNo low-cut\, strapless\, backless\, or halter tops. Straps need to be at least one inch wide. No exposed cleavage or bra straps.\nNo pants.\n\nBasic Dance Etiquette \nHere is a review of some basic dance etiquette. Thank you for sharing this with your young dancers. \nFor boys: \nAsk a variety of girls to dance. They are waiting for you to ask. \nYou may be nervous asking a girl to dance. That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked. \nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor. \nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance. \nFor girls: \nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer. \nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by opening up your circle. \nFor both: \nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations. \nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime. \nA Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance.

SUMMARY:Tree Walk\, Biology/Species Identification Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Come spend a day with us in beautiful Solvang at the Hans Christian Anderson Park for a Treewalk sponsored by NatureTrack: \n“The not-for-profit NatureTrack advocates the educational approach of noted author and educator David Sobel that fosters a child’s love of the earth while also developing a child’s academic and social competence. David Sobel’s most recent book “Place-Based Education: Connecting Classrooms & Communities” offers scientific and anecdotal evidence that placed-based education is successfully meeting\, and in many cases surpassing\, the various standards and mandates that are increasingly a part of educational reform in this country.” \nYou can read more about NatureTrack here: https://naturetrack.org/about/ \nThey are arranging docents for us to focus on biology and tree species identification. \nCost: Free \nWho: Everyone \nTime:  Field Trip Begins at 10:30\, please arrive by 10:15 \nAdditional information/What to bring: \n\nWe will be splitting up into two groups so that the docents can give plenty of attention to each student.  We have also been instructed to “make large\, legible nametags that adhere or attach well to the students.(Please also make them for adults and denote if Teacher\, Parent\, or Aide)”  I will make the nametags for everyone who is signed up.  I will probably make a necklace with yarn and cardstock\, but if you and your kids want to make your own name tags for fun\, let me know.  I don’t think the sticker ones we usually use is what they are looking for.\n We will be eating lunch on the trail\, as I understand it.  They ask that each student has their own backpack with two water bottles and lunch.   Just make sure you bring enough food and water for yourself and your kids with you on the walk – if you want to carry it all\, or have your kids carry their own is up to you.\nParents attending will be asked to participate in all activities with the exception of answering questions intended for the students!\nStudents are discouraged from bringing cell phones or cameras with them on the trail.  Parents may have a cell phone/camera\, but they would like parents to set a good example in not using them on the trip.  I think it is fine for the parents to take some pictures or use a cell phone if necessary\, but please make sure it is not a distraction.\n Participants should wear long pants\, closed toed sturdy shoes\, a hat and sunscreen.\nIf you have any questions about this field trip\, email me at bonnieadair@verizon.net so I can be sure to ask.\n\nOptional: Mrs. Tromans will lead us in a nature art project after we are done with our docent led walk.  This will be a great opportunity for the kids to process what we have learned\, make something for their school portfolio\, and maybe even make some art to submit for our upcoming fine arts festival in May.  Bring some colored pencils and your nature sketch book if you have them.  Another idea I had is to visit Ostrich Land. https://www.ostrichlandusa.com/ \, and we could even meet up together for breakfast before the field trip if any of you are adventurous/crazy enough to get up and go that early =) \nSign Up:  The more the merrier! We would really like to have some more families join us.  I know it’s a drive\, but Solvang is a wonderful place to visit\, Hans Christian Anderson Park is awesome\, and I am really excited about this nature field trip.  I have not been able to find any comparable field trip offerings in Ventura County.

SUMMARY:Camarillo Park Day & P.E.*
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Arneill Ranch Park in Camarillo for a play date\, fellowship & P.E. This park has a sand playground area\, a couple swings\, a 1/4 mile flat packed dirt track\, and a very large open grass area in the center of the track.  There is also exercise equipment placed around the track. There are restrooms next to the playground.  Tell your kids to bring their bikes\, scooters\, etc.   This would also be a good park for flying a kite.  Bring some outdoor toys\, sports equipment\, blanket\, chairs and picnic lunch. \n*From 12:30-1:30 some of the kids have been playing sports.  They have been playing baseball\, capture the flag\, kickball\, dodgeball and frisbee.  We’ll let them decide amongst each other what they want to play.  The kids have all been doing a good job organizing their own games.  All ages are welcome to join.  If you have baseball gear\, please bring it.

Thank you.
