SUMMARY:Fine Arts Festival*Event Moved to 5/17/20
DESCRIPTION:Event moved to 5/17 \, see on calendar here http://achev.ipage.com/event/fine-arts-festival-on-zoom/ \n \nThe Arts Festival is a wonderful time for our students to share their God-given talents.  This is a non-judged activity\, designed to appreciate these talents of the homeschool community.  Due to time constraints\, we may need to limit the number of activities per person (i.e. 2 solo events) depending on how many entries we receive! \nWe’ve had an amazing response in the past with such creative entries as comedic skits\, dance\, bands\, mime\, poetry reading\, excerpts from plays\, films\, instrumental solos (piano\, guitar\, harp\, violin…)\, vocal solos\, photography\, drawings\, sewing\, knitting\, models and more.  This is also a great opportunity to recognize and encourage the hard work that goes into developing these life enriching skills. \nWe ask that all performing and fine art be appropriate for families with young children and glorifying to God. When our families come together as a group\, we hope to create an atmosphere that allows for consideration and grace. \nValues we trust every ACHEV family to embrace are: \n\n\nArtist/performer – Personal opinions and freedoms can and should at times be humbly set aside temporarily for the sake of the community. A good rule of thumb is if you have any concern it might offend\, choose something safer to perform/create/wear. Remember all ages may be present\, and ask yourself\, “Will it honor God?”\, and\, “Will it bless those who hear and see?” \n\n\nAudience – There is a time and place to graciously make allowances for the differing opinions about what is appropriate to perform/create/wear. Since this event serves our entire membership\, we can expect our diverse community to be just that: diverse. That is part of the beauty of community. We offer benefit of the doubt that each participant sincerely desires to honor God and bless those who hear and see. \n\n\nWe also believe constructive feedback is important. So please feel free to talk with leadership about any aspect of any ACHEV event or activity. Your input is valuable and appreciated. \n_______________________________________________________________________________________ \n\nAll ages of children are encouraged to submit artwork and/or perform.  We want to see what even the youngest members of our group are creating!  Parents are welcome to perform and/or display fine art as well!  We would really like to see 2 or 3 parents show off one of their talents as an encouragement for the students. \nEach family should bring a finger food to share for our intermission period. \n\nWe are using Google Forms again this year.  Let us know if you have any questions about filling them out.    You will receive an email copy of the form you submitted and the email will contain a link allowing you to edit your response if need be.  You will not be able to edit your response without this link\, so save this email.  If you make a mistake we can also delete the old form and you can submit it again.  It does not take long to fill out.  Please email bonnieadair@verizon.net if you have any trouble accessing or filling out these forms.  I am happy to help! \nSubmission forms are due by Friday April 10th and artwork is due at a drop off location by Saturday April 11th.  Please plan ahead as we need to stick firmly to the submission deadlines and won’t be accepting late entries.  The organizers have a lot of work to do to prepare for this event and  we need the help of the parents to make everything run as smoothly as possible.  Thank you for understanding. \nPerforming Arts Submission Form (limit 2 per student\, not counting accompaniment performances): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfocGZs_oQe7mi_IkIl9o4G6_lOBbTWk8apbFzIlZAVHXxnXA/viewform?usp=sf_link \nVisual Arts Submission Form (limit 3 per student): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdh7TOsTCusSR7_62SnFH0TzE1vqB8vf4M4swPvKHGalNJv1w/viewform?usp=sf_link \nIf you plan to participate in this event\, please do not delay in filling out the form below to let us know how you would like to help.  We need to have some helpers in place long before the submission deadlines.  So\, even if you haven’t filled out the forms for your kids’ art and performances\, please still go ahead and fill out the volunteer form.  One job in particular that we would like to have filled early is someone to host/organize an “after party” for the families after the event where we can eat some food and fellowship\, and maybe have games or activities.  This would be geared towards older kids since it will be late in the evening\, but all ages are welcome. \nVolunteer Job Sign Up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdOWf9oJL7HT4mVm3m9avYKLx9NaT_uG_gAvZNDnt2MY4MMqA/viewform?usp=sf_lin

SUMMARY:**Cancelled**Ojai Park Day Hoping to Reschedule
DESCRIPTION:**This park day is cancelled\, but we will try to reschedule it for sometime in late spring or early summer. \nLet’s get together for a special park day in Ojai at Seoul Park.  If you have not been to this park\, it is well worth the drive.  This park has not changed in decades\, and my kids think it is so cool!  It still has the huge rocket ship with a tall metal slide\, planet with a ring around it\, and swings on long chains.  There is lots of open space\, wooded area\, and quiet\,  being far away from major roads.  There is also a softball field\, and my 15 year old boy would love to have some other big kids to play ball with! \nThere is a $2 fee to park\, and you must have exact change to place in an envelope. \nHighway 150 to Boardman Road; park entrance is off Boardman Road. \n  \n

SUMMARY:**Canceled** Sock Hop
DESCRIPTION:Sadly\, we had to cancel this event due to the coronavirus threat as recommended by Ventura County Public Health.\n—————————————— CANCELED —————————————— \nThe ACHEV Sock Hop has been an annual favorite for many years! Come join us for a great evening of 1950’s era swing dance fun. \nWho: Private homeschooled students in ACHEV\, TPCS\, and SBCHI\, 6th grade and up and parents. You may invite guests\, but guest need to be cleared in advance with Patty Silver at patricia.silver@me.com. \nThese dances are one of the few times we cannot include the whole family as there are no accommodations for children 5th grade and younger. Please make arrangements to leave younger children at home. Babes in arms OK. \nWhere: Poinsettia Pavilion\, located at 3451 Foothill Road in Ventura \nChaperones: A parent chaperone is required for students under 18. As with all ACHEV functions\, parents are responsible for their children’s behavior and safety for the duration of the event. If you cannot chaperone your own child\, please make arrangements in advance with another parent. Thank you. \nCost: $10 per student\, $30 family limit\, parent chaperones free. Pay at the door with either cash or check payable to ACHEV. \nAttire: While 1950’s era dresses and skirts (which were predominately below the knee) are most suitable for this event\, we have included illustrations of the minimum hemline allowed by the dress code for dances in general. Please note if dresses have sheer layers\, it is the solid fabric that must be at least to the top of the knee\, as shown below. Please note the requirement for wearing modest leggings or shorts under skirts\, since twirling and other athletic moves are involved in many swing dance steps. \nBoys\n– T-shirts OK for this dance\n– Jeans OK for this dance\, no holes \nGirls\n– Skirts or dresses must be knee length or longer. (This means touching the top of the knee\, regardless of leggings.) If there is a lace overlay\, the skirt underneath (solid fabric) needs to touch the knee.\n– Leggings or shorts are required if the skirt rises past the knees while twirling.\n– No low-cut\, strapless\, backless\, or halter tops. Straps need to be at least 1 inch wide\n– No exposed midriffs\, cleavage or bra straps \nSock Hop Dance Visual Dress Code  guidelines are enforced. \nBring: A finger food snack to share. \nGuests? Yes! The more the merrier! You may invite guests. Guests need to be cleared in advance with Patty Silver at patricia.silver@me.com. It is your responsibility to inform your guests about the the dance\, including rules\, dance etiquette\, and the dress code. \nBasic Dance Etiquette\nThank you for sharing this with your children. \nFor boys:\nAsk a variety of girls to dance. They are waiting for you to ask.\nYou may be nervous asking a girl to dance. That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor.\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance. \nFor girls:\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by op ening up your circle. \nFor both:\nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations.\nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime.\nA Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance. \n \nWould you like to help? Please use this google sheet. Thank you. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-jb4iTSEgv7WRmS2hSTh2jF5L-wILRL_-chkP1ZR3_w/edit?usp=sharing

DESCRIPTION:**Update 3/14/20 The Reagan Library is closed until further notice** \nWhat: This is a Self Guided Tour of the Reagan Library & Museum and the special exhibit Egypt’s Lost Cities.  Unfortunately\, the Reagan Library does not offer guided tours for homeschool groups.  Here is some information about the special exhibit https://www.reaganfoundation.org/library-museum/special-exhibits/lost-cities/ .   You can stay at the museum as long as you like.  They recommend allowing 2.5-3 hours to view the exhibits. \nWho: Everyone.  We need a minimum of 10 students in order to qualify as a homeschool group and get discounted admission into the library.  If we do not get 10 students\, we will have to cancel. \nCost: $13.95 per student ages 3-17 (this is the cost of the special exhibit).  Adults are full price at $29.95.   Children 2 and under are free.  I need payment at least two weeks in advance.  You can mail a check to me: Bonnie Adair\, 174 Granada Street\, Camarillo\, CA 93010 or paypal me at https://paypal.me/bonniemaeadair?locale.x=en_US \nWhat You Need to Know: \n\nAlthough this exhibition is appropriate for people of all ages – and includes great history lessons for children – it’s important to remember that these statues and sculptures were created over 1\,200 years ago in Egypt.  As such\, a few of the sculptures feature era-specific depictions of men and women without clothing\, or with very limited clothing.\nThe students must stay with a chaperone at all times during their visit here at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and we enforce a strict code of behavioral conduct. If students misbehave and chaperones are not able to control their group\, we will ask you to leave the museum.\nPlease review this video with your students.  It includes some rules of conduct. https://www.reaganfoundation.org/education/class-visits/museum-only-tours/\n\nDeadline: Sign Up and Payment by 3/17/2020 \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:**Cancelled**Field Trip - Guide Dogs of America
DESCRIPTION:**Update 3/12/20**I am sorry\, but GDA has cancelled all tours due to the Coronavirus scare.  We will try to reschedule for June. \nWhat: Tour of Guide Dogs of America Facility.   \n\nIn this field trip\, students will have the opportunity to learn how guide dogs are trained\, how they could become a trainer or get involved in other ways to help with the GDA mission\, learn more about the challenges blind people face\, and how to act if they encounter a Guide Dog.\nIf a class is not in session\, the group will be visiting the dormitory area where the\nstudents stay for 21 days while training with their guide dogs. The children should\nconduct themselves in a mannerly way\, asking questions one at a time.\nYou will have a kennel visit where you will have an opportunity to see and interact\, in a\nlimited fashion with a group of dogs. Children need to be well behaved and avoid\nmaking the dogs nutty!\nGuide Dogs of America (GDA) has been offering guide dog mobility services\, free of charge\, to qualified blind and visually impaired individuals\, since 1948. GDA breeds\, raises and trains Labrador Retrievers\, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds to be partnered with blind men and women living in the United States and Canada.\n\nWho: Students ages 9 and up only and parents.  Younger siblings will not be permitted to attend the field trip.  We need a minimum of 15 students in attendance or we will have to cancel this field trip. \nCost: Free \nWhat You Need To Know: \n\nRules of Conduct2 – Copy\nThe more the kids know about the whole process prior to our arrival the more they will get out of the presentation (i.e. what is a guide dog? How do they help?).  Please go over these materials with your students: Q&A\, Student Worksheet/Questions for Review\, GDA Answer Sheet 4-8\, HandDrawnDog\, CLASSROOM EXERCISES\, Overview&MeetingaGDAteam\, GDA booklist-non-fic 4-8\nHave the children formulate questions that they might like to ask.\nThere is no charge for our visit or tour of course\, and you are under no obligation to do anything.  However\, the children are never too young to realize that this is primarily a volunteer effort and we find that they are much more enthusiastic about the program if they feel they are doing their part.  Take a peek at the how children can help document and see if you might be interested in “partnering” with Guide Dogs of America.  Also\, you can view Giving Opportunities.\n Each child can contribute a dog toy that we use for our puppies that are in the kennel or add to  gift baskets for our Open House Silent Auction and it can be the “gift that keeps on giving” since people pay good money for our lovely baskets and it all goes to support GDA.\nno food products for the pups\, not even homemade dog cookies – we have our puppies on a very specific diet and don’t want any upset tummies.\nVisitors are not allowed to have lunch on the school grounds. GDA can provide\ndirections to a nearby public park\, which would be suitable for a picnic after your tour.\nSign Up Using the Google Sheet below\n\n

SUMMARY:Blueberry Picking Field Trip One Acre Farm
DESCRIPTION:What: One Acre Farm is only open to the public on Saturdays\, and we have arranged a special field trip so that we can pick together on Friday March 20th.  One Acre Farm is just outside of Camarillo in the Santa Rosa Valley.    Co-Owner Scott Bahler is excited to share with our kids his knowledge of healthy eating habits\, organic farming\, varieties of blueberries\, how to start farming\, and the rewards and challenges they face being small farmers.  He will also answer questions anyone has.  Here is an article the VC Star did on them last year.  You can learn a little about them by reading: https://www.vcstar.com/story/life/2019/03/07/one-acre-farm-camarillo-organic-blueberries/3070997002/ \nMost likely there will also be organic strawberries available for picking\, though I don’t know the price for those yet. \n \n \n  \nWho: Everyone.  This field trip is family friendly. \nCost: Field Trip is free\, and you are welcome to pick blueberries for $3.50 per 6 oz container. \nDetails: \n\nWear closed toe shoes.\nDo not bring dogs.\nI do not recommend bringing a stroller.  We will be given golf cart rides (the kids’ favorite part) up to the acre.  Toddlers can walk around and pick berries (or play with sticks and dirt)\, and it would be a good idea to have a carrier if you are bringing a baby.\nDress in layers\, wear sunscreen & hats\, bring water.\nThere are nice bathrooms below the parking lot\, but there are no bathrooms near the acre where we are picking.\nStay and pick as long as you like\, and leave when you are ready\n\nSign Up using the link below.

SUMMARY:Volleyball Clinic**Cancelled Today
DESCRIPTION:**You May Drop off for This Activity** but parents are more than welcome to stay if they like. \nCome for a fun time and mark PE off on your homeschooling checklist.   Mr. Adair is running this clinic again for ACHEV boys and girls (including his own kids) to learn how to play volleyball.   They will focus on learning the skills needed to play a game: serving\, passing\, setting\, and getting the ball over the net.  They will also learn the rules of the game\, how to rotate\, the roles of each position\, and eventually they will learn the position they are best suited for with their unique abilities. \nWho: ACHEV boys and girls ages 10 and up. \n\nParents and younger siblings are welcome to stay and watch\, go play on the playground\, relax\, etc.  You may drop your child/ren off as long as they will stay with the group\, but please let Kevin know that you are dropping off and make sure he has your contact information.  It would be nice to have one parent that is willing to stay to help the kids with their drills\, keep score during the game\, etc.  \n\nWhen: This is a weekly clinic.  We will take March 13th off because Kevin has to work\, and Good Friday off (April 10th). \nRSVP Required: We need at least 8 kids to play.  The Adair kids will always be there\, so that means we need 6 more.  Please RSVP by Thursday night\, or I will have to cancel the clinic for that week.  RSVP using this spreadsheet:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19SRc0NQq0M1VXEv2etpngDJOURHwZX1dD6W2M5h5YWY/edit?usp=sharing \nI just copied my kids’ names all across the columns.  Hopefully this isn’t too much trouble for everyone.  I just need something to help me keep track and make sure we have enough kids to play each week. \nWe are excited about this clinic and hope to see the kids grow in physical stature\, have fun working as a team\, and enjoying some friendly competition.
