SUMMARY:CHEA's Special Needs Mini-Con
DESCRIPTION:Part of the CHEA Summer Series 2020\n\n\nMany people think of “special needs” as the same as learning disabilities\, and many of these learning differences require special teaching methods. But “special needs” encompasses much more than learning difficulties. It is a broad range of needs\, and a parent’s calling is to help children learn and fulfill their God-given mission. \nHundreds of families are successfully teaching their own children who have special needs. These special challenges are better handled in the loving environment of home. \nJoin us for this one-day mini-conference that will offer solutions for homeschooling families who teach students across a spectrum of special needs. \nREGISTRATION\nThe Main Track workshops are free to all\, with registration. The Members Only Track will offer additional live workshops and recordings exclusively as a benefit to those who are CHEA Members (you can become a member during event registration). While free\, registration is required to access both the Main Track and Members Only Track. \nRegister Now \nMAIN TRACK WORKSHOPS (FREE TO ALL)\nThe Essentials of Special Education Homeschool (Peggy Ployhar)\nGeared toward new homeschoolers\, learn how to get started on the right track and avoid common pitfalls of homeschooling a child with special needs. The basics of homeschooling high school will also be covered. \nFoundation of Learning Styles (More than Auditory\, Visual\, and Kinesthetic) (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nA child’s learning abilities increase when their brain is properly stimulated. Dr. Jan shares how to optimize the brain for better performance in academics and in life. Discover the most efficient way to teach math operations\, math facts\, reading\, spelling\, and penmanship. Learn practical techniques ensuring higher performance whether gifted\, typical\, or challenged. \nSUCCESSFULLY Homeschooling Your Child with Learning Differences (Jill Stowell) \nMEMBERS ONLY TRACK WORKSHOPS (AVAILABLE TO CHEA MEMBERS)\nAuditory\, What? (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nHave you ever talked to your child and he looks right at you but goes off and does something totally different? You might ask yourself: Is this a discipline issue? Do I need to get his hearing checked? What has happened to his character? In this workshop\, discover reasons why this is happening and what can be done to remedy the situation. \nThe Benefits of Writing An IEP for Your Child (Dawn Spence)\nSetting goals that can provide a roadmap to your child’s education \nBreaking the Myths and Walking in the Shoes of Students with Dyslexia\, Learning\, and Attention Challenges (Jill Stowell)\nDuring this simulation workshop\, experience for yourself what it might feel like to have an attention deficit\, live in a world of language when you have an auditory processing disorder\, or decipher a page of text through the eyes of a student with dyslexia. These experiences can be eye opening and transformational for parents of children who struggle with these and other learning challenges.\n \nCustomizing Your Curriculum (Peggy Ployhar)\nWith a focus on individualizing education\, parents will receive practical tips for how to do that for unique children based on their strengths while still remediating areas of learning difficulties. \nCheap Online Resources for Special Education Homeschooling (Peggy Ployhar)\nWith over 100 links to share\, families who are looking for resources on a budget will find practical information and resources for teaching a variety of students. \nLearning Difficulties\, Dyslexia\, ADD/ADHD — There is Hope for Change (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nDo you suspect Dyslexia/ADD/ADHD or other learning labels? Labels typically come from a list of symptoms\, not a “disease” or “brain abnormality.” Dr. Jan will guide you through the root causes of symptomatic labels and give practical skills for training your child’s brain to eliminate the symptoms. Open a brilliant future for your child through understanding how the brain works…or why it doesn’t currently seem to be working so well. The goal of this workshop is to help you unlock your child’s full potential. \nWhat Can I Do To Help My Child Be Successful At Co-op? (Dawn Spence)\nPractical strategies to help your child to have a positive co-op experience \nTo read speaker bios and register\, visit https://californiahomeschoolconventions.com/special-needs-solutions/

SUMMARY:CHEA's Homeschooling and the Church Mini-Con
DESCRIPTION:Part of CHEA’s Summer Series 2020\nVirtually every child in our nation has spent the last few months homeschooling. Some parents had already chosen private Christian home education because of what is happening in our public schools–from graphic sex education to values that do not align with our Christian faith to the promotion of agendas of powerful and vocal special interest groups. Others are now considering bringing their children home out of concern for what the classroom environment will look like when schools resume. \nThis raises some questions for churches. What can the church do to help? Does the church have a role to play? Is homeschooling a viable option for Christian parents? \nThe Bible says that parents are responsible for their children’s upbringing and education. Regardless of the form of education (public or private)\, the responsibility rests on parents to see that their children are educated. Can we hope to pass our faith and a biblical worldview on to our children when they are being educated in a godless environment? Can we expect our children to have an abiding faith when schools teach or infer that God belongs in the compartments of home and church\, but not in schools or the greater society? \nREGISTRATION\nWhile this event is free\, registration is required. Once registered\, you will receive information about logging in to our Zoom workshop. \nRegister Now \nMEET THE SPEAKERS\nBrad Dacus\, Esq.\nBrad Dacus is the President and Founder of the Pacific Justice Institute (PJI). He served as Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Phil Gramm\, and went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas\, School of Law. Brad can be heard weekly on The Dacus Report on more than 170 radio stations across the country. His varied public speaking opportunities include public debate and testifying before the United States House of Representatives in Washington\, D.C. He has also testified numerous times before the California State Legislature on legislation affecting religious freedom and parents’ rights. He was presented an honorary Doctorate of Religious Freedom and Family Rights degree from California Baptist University in recognition of his commitment to faith and justice and his work protecting parental rights and religious freedom through the Pacific Justice Institute. \n \nJeff Byers\nJeff and his wife\, Kerry. have been married for more than 36 years and have homeschooled their five children for more than 30 years\, graduating their last child in 2019. Jeff was ordained in ministry in 1993 and\, together with his wife\, they incorporated and founded God’s Word Church. Over the years\, they have run homeschool support groups as well as founded two PSPs. They also serve on CHEA’s Regional Advisory Board in the High Desert.

SUMMARY:Fine Arts Festival on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:We will be hosting a live Zoom Fine Arts Festival!  This is a non-judged activity\, designed to appreciate these talents of the homeschool community.  Kids can display their talents live with their computer or tablet audio and video\, and there will be a live slideshow presentation of visual artwork.  This is meant to be fun and fairly casual.  So\, let’s put aside our worries of things not being just right\, and encourage each other by sharing our talents. \nAll ages of children are encouraged to submit artwork and/or perform.  We want to see what even the youngest members of our group are creating! \nVisual Art: Take a photo of yourself holding your artwork so we can see your face =) and then take a close-up photo or scan of your artwork.  Email these photos/files to Shelley Znamenacek at Shelley@zoltar.net along with the child’s first and last name\, and age. Maximum of three entries per child.  All visual art must be submitted via email by Sunday May 10th. \nPerforming Art: Think of something that can be performed in front of your computer or tablet/phone.  Ex; instrumental performance\, singing\, poetry recital\, a speech performance (ex; reciting a favorite short story)\, magic tricks\, or a skit.  I bet you and your kids can come up with some really clever ideas.   Please limit your submissions to one solo performance and one ensemble performance.  Complete one form for each performance  Performing Art Submission Form   All performances must have a form submitted by Sunday May 10th \nIf you would like to test out your performance on Zoom\,  please email bonnieadair@verizon.net and we will set up a time to meet on Zoom so you can make sure everything will work. \nWe ask that all performing and fine art be appropriate for families with young children and glorifying to God. When our families come together as a group\, we hope to create an atmosphere that allows for consideration and grace. \nValues we trust every ACHEV family to embrace are: \n\n\nArtist/performer – Personal opinions and freedoms can and should at times be humbly set aside temporarily for the sake of the community. A good rule of thumb is if you have any concern it might offend\, choose something safer to perform/create/wear. Remember all ages may be present\, and ask yourself\, “Will it honor God?”\, and\, “Will it bless those who hear and see?” \n\n\nAudience – There is a time and place to graciously make allowances for the differing opinions about what is appropriate to perform/create/wear. Since this event serves our entire membership\, we can expect our diverse community to be just that: diverse. That is part of the beauty of community. We offer benefit of the doubt that each participant sincerely desires to honor God and bless those who hear and see. \n\n\nWe also believe constructive feedback is important. So please feel free to talk with leadership about any aspect of any ACHEV event or activity. Your input is valuable and appreciated.

SUMMARY:Fine Arts Festival*Event Moved to 5/17/20
DESCRIPTION:Event moved to 5/17 \, see on calendar here http://achev.ipage.com/event/fine-arts-festival-on-zoom/ \n \nThe Arts Festival is a wonderful time for our students to share their God-given talents.  This is a non-judged activity\, designed to appreciate these talents of the homeschool community.  Due to time constraints\, we may need to limit the number of activities per person (i.e. 2 solo events) depending on how many entries we receive! \nWe’ve had an amazing response in the past with such creative entries as comedic skits\, dance\, bands\, mime\, poetry reading\, excerpts from plays\, films\, instrumental solos (piano\, guitar\, harp\, violin…)\, vocal solos\, photography\, drawings\, sewing\, knitting\, models and more.  This is also a great opportunity to recognize and encourage the hard work that goes into developing these life enriching skills. So please feel free to talk with leadership about any aspect of any ACHEV event or activity. Your input is valuable and appreciated. \n_______________________________________________________________________________________ \n\nAll ages of children are encouraged to submit artwork and/or perform.  We want to see what even the youngest members of our group are creating!  Parents are welcome to perform and/or display fine art as well!  We would really like to see 2 or 3 parents show off one of their talents as an encouragement for the students. \nEach family should bring a finger food to share for our intermission period. \n\nWe are using Google Forms again this year.  Let us know if you have any questions about filling them out.    You will receive an email copy of the form you submitted and the email will contain a link allowing you to edit your response if need be.  You will not be able to edit your response without this link\, so save this email.  If you make a mistake we can also delete the old form and you can submit it again.  It does not take long to fill out.  Please email bonnieadair@verizon.net if you have any trouble accessing or filling out these forms.  I am happy to help! \nSubmission forms are due by Friday April 10th and artwork is due at a drop off location by Saturday April 11th.  Please plan ahead as we need to stick firmly to the submission deadlines and won’t be accepting late entries.  The organizers have a lot of work to do to prepare for this event and  we need the help of the parents to make everything run as smoothly as possible.  Thank you for understanding. \nPerforming Arts Submission Form (limit 2 per student\, not counting accompaniment performances): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfocGZs_oQe7mi_IkIl9o4G6_lOBbTWk8apbFzIlZAVHXxnXA/viewform?usp=sf_link \nVisual Arts Submission Form (limit 3 per student): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdh7TOsTCusSR7_62SnFH0TzE1vqB8vf4M4swPvKHGalNJv1w/viewform?usp=sf_link \nIf you plan to participate in this event\, please do not delay in filling out the form below to let us know how you would like to help.  We need to have some helpers in place long before the submission deadlines.  So\, even if you haven’t filled out the forms for your kids’ art and performances\, please still go ahead and fill out the volunteer form.  One job in particular that we would like to have filled early is someone to host/organize an “after party” for the families after the event where we can eat some food and fellowship\, and maybe have games or activities.  This would be geared towards older kids since it will be late in the evening\, but all ages are welcome. \nVolunteer Job Sign Up: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdOWf9oJL7HT4mVm3m9avYKLx9NaT_uG_gAvZNDnt2MY4MMqA/viewform?usp=sf_lin

SUMMARY:**Cancelled**Ojai Park Day Hoping to Reschedule
DESCRIPTION:**This park day is cancelled\, but we will try to reschedule it for sometime in late spring or early summer. \nLet’s get together for a special park day in Ojai at Seoul Park.  If you have not been to this park\, it is well worth the drive.  This park has not changed in decades\, and my kids think it is so cool!  It still has the huge rocket ship with a tall metal slide\, planet with a ring around it\, and swings on long chains.  There is lots of open space\, wooded area\, and quiet\,  being far away from major roads.  There is also a softball field\, and my 15 year old boy would love to have some other big kids to play ball with! \nThere is a $2 fee to park\, and you must have exact change to place in an envelope. \nHighway 150 to Boardman Road; park entrance is off Boardman Road. \n  \n

She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor.\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance. \nFor girls:\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by op ening up your circle. \nFor both:\nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations.\nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime.\nA Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance. \n \nWould you like to help? Please use this google sheet. DESCRIPTION:**Update 3/14/20 The Reagan Library is closed until further notice** \nWhat: This is a Self Guided Tour of the Reagan Library & Museum and the special exhibit Egypt’s Lost Cities.  Unfortunately\, the Reagan Library does not offer guided tours for homeschool groups.  Here is some information about the special exhibit https://www.reaganfoundation.org/library-museum/special-exhibits/lost-cities/ .   You can stay at the museum as long as you like.  They recommend allowing 2.5-3 hours to view the exhibits. \nWho: Everyone.  We need a minimum of 10 students in order to qualify as a homeschool group and get discounted admission into the library.  If we do not get 10 students\, we will have to cancel. \nCost: $13.95 per student ages 3-17 (this is the cost of the special exhibit).  Adults are full price at $29.95.   Children 2 and under are free.  I need payment at least two weeks in advance.  You can mail a check to me: Bonnie Adair\, 174 Granada Street\, Camarillo\, CA 93010 or paypal me at https://paypal.me/bonniemaeadair?locale.x=en_US \nWhat You Need to Know: \n\nAlthough this exhibition is appropriate for people of all ages – and includes great history lessons for children – it’s important to remember that these statues and sculptures were created over 1\,200 years ago in Egypt.  As such\, a few of the sculptures feature era-specific depictions of men and women without clothing\, or with very limited clothing.\nThe students must stay with a chaperone at all times during their visit here at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and we enforce a strict code of behavioral conduct. If students misbehave and chaperones are not able to control their group\, we will ask you to leave the museum.\nPlease review this video with your students.  It includes some rules of conduct. https://www.reaganfoundation.org/education/class-visits/museum-only-tours/\n\nDeadline: Sign Up and Payment by 3/17/2020 \n  \n  \n
