SUMMARY:CHEA Webinar: Homeschooling Preschool
DESCRIPTION:From CHEA’s website: \n“Many families are beginning their exploration of private home education when their children are two\, three\, or four years old. Often seeking curriculum and other at-home resources to begin teaching the youngest members of their family\, it can be easy to get caught in the trap of formal instruction when it is not yet necessary (and as some research shows\, not beneficial). Join three homeschool moms who have experienced homeschooling a preschooler and are now at various points in their homeschool journey. The panel discussion will be followed by a time of Q&A. This event is free\, but registration is required.” \nTo learn more\, read about the panelists\, and to register\, visit https://www.cheaofca.org/events/homeschooling-preschool-webinar/

SUMMARY:(No support meeting January)
DESCRIPTION:We’re not meeting in January. See you next month\, Lord willing!\nThis is not an ACHEV sponsored event. It is a church small group for homeschool parents\, open to the church and the community. ACHEV parents are welcome.\nBefore the public health order\, we would open our home to ACHEV parents about one evening a month for support meetings on a variety of topics throughout the year. While we have adapted by offering shorter weekly support with Tips at Two on Zoom\, we sure miss being able to meet in person. \nNow that churches are permitted to host small groups of ten or less\, I’ve decided to lead a small group at Encounter\, a homeschool support group! Tips at Two will continue as long as it is needed. These additional monthly meetings will be for deeper discussions and fellowship support in person. I am open to ideas\, topics\, speaker suggestions\, etc. \nThis will be held 2nd Tuesday evenings monthly at Encounter\, located at 6950 Ralston Avenue (corner of Johnson and Ralston) in Ventura\, room 301\, which is in the modular building closest to the small parking lot on Johnson Avenue. \nIf you would like to register at the church website\, visit https://encounterlife.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/548502 and scroll down to find the homeschool support group. Registration is not essential\, but registered members of the group will have first chance to RSVP for each meeting. Please let me know if you have any questions. \nDates for the year – RSVP to Susan at 805-407-6851. \n10/13/2020 – New to homeschooling? Please come and invite a friend who is curious about home education. RSVP to Susan Pineda to make sure there is space for you. \n11/10/2020 – Planning and scheduling for a peaceful and efficient homeschool \n12/8/2020 – Topic TBD \n1/12/2021 – Topic TBD \n2/9/2021 – Topic TBD \n3/9/2021 – Topic TBD \n4/13/2021 – Topic TBD \n5/11/2021 – Topic TBD \nI’ll edit with topics for discussion\, guest speakers\, etc. as the year progresses. \nI look forward to supporting homeschool parents in person in a safe and permitted place! SUMMARY:CHEA's Homeschooling Children with Mental Health Struggles
DESCRIPTION:This is part of CHEA’s Monthly Webinar Series\nHOMESCHOOLING CHILDREN WITH MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES\nwith Vicki Tillman\nOctober 27\, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. \nOver the years more and more parents are taking their children out of traditional school settings to homeschool because of anxiety\, depression\, bipolar disorder\, and other diagnoses. Because of the sensitive nature (social stigmatism) and lack of education surrounding this topic many parents are reluctant to talk about it and as such\, are not being supported. Let’s set all of that aside and have a candid talk in a safe environment about homeschooling children with mental illness. Regardless of the diagnoses\, there are practical tools families can implement that will help you and your child have a successful homeschool experience. \n\n\n\nVicki Tillman\nVicki’s mission is to advance God’s kingdom by investing in people. She has lived this call as homeschool mom\, advisor to the upperclassmen in her local homeschool community for 18 years\, and as a homeschool coach. Vicki shares her expertise in homeschooling\, prayer\, healthy life and career topics\, and mental health topics through her coaching at Vicki Tillman Coaching. posts at 7 Sisters\, Pike Creek Psychological Center\,  and Vicki Tillman Coaching . A homeschooling mom for 20-plus years\, all five of Vicki’s children graduated from homeschool high school and have completed various degrees at college and graduate levels. Vicki holds an MA in Counseling from Liberty University\, and has worked as a counselor and life/career coach at Pike Creek Psychological Center since 1996. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:CHEA's Special Needs Mini-Con
DESCRIPTION:Part of the CHEA Summer Series 2020\n\n\nMany people think of “special needs” as the same as learning disabilities\, and many of these learning differences require special teaching methods. But “special needs” encompasses much more than learning difficulties. It is a broad range of needs\, and a parent’s calling is to help children learn and fulfill their God-given mission. \nHundreds of families are successfully teaching their own children who have special needs. These special challenges are better handled in the loving environment of home. \nJoin us for this one-day mini-conference that will offer solutions for homeschooling families who teach students across a spectrum of special needs. \nREGISTRATION\nThe Main Track workshops are free to all\, with registration. The Members Only Track will offer additional live workshops and recordings exclusively as a benefit to those who are CHEA Members (you can become a member during event registration). While free\, registration is required to access both the Main Track and Members Only Track. \nRegister Now \nMAIN TRACK WORKSHOPS (FREE TO ALL)\nThe Essentials of Special Education Homeschool (Peggy Ployhar)\nGeared toward new homeschoolers\, learn how to get started on the right track and avoid common pitfalls of homeschooling a child with special needs. The basics of homeschooling high school will also be covered. \nFoundation of Learning Styles (More than Auditory\, Visual\, and Kinesthetic) (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nA child’s learning abilities increase when their brain is properly stimulated. Dr. Jan shares how to optimize the brain for better performance in academics and in life. Discover the most efficient way to teach math operations\, math facts\, reading\, spelling\, and penmanship. Learn practical techniques ensuring higher performance whether gifted\, typical\, or challenged. \nSUCCESSFULLY Homeschooling Your Child with Learning Differences (Jill Stowell) \nMEMBERS ONLY TRACK WORKSHOPS (AVAILABLE TO CHEA MEMBERS)\nAuditory\, What? (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nHave you ever talked to your child and he looks right at you but goes off and does something totally different? You might ask yourself: Is this a discipline issue? Do I need to get his hearing checked? What has happened to his character? In this workshop\, discover reasons why this is happening and what can be done to remedy the situation. \nThe Benefits of Writing An IEP for Your Child (Dawn Spence)\nSetting goals that can provide a roadmap to your child’s education \nBreaking the Myths and Walking in the Shoes of Students with Dyslexia\, Learning\, and Attention Challenges (Jill Stowell)\nDuring this simulation workshop\, experience for yourself what it might feel like to have an attention deficit\, live in a world of language when you have an auditory processing disorder\, or decipher a page of text through the eyes of a student with dyslexia. These experiences can be eye opening and transformational for parents of children who struggle with these and other learning challenges.\n \nCustomizing Your Curriculum (Peggy Ployhar)\nWith a focus on individualizing education\, parents will receive practical tips for how to do that for unique children based on their strengths while still remediating areas of learning difficulties. \nCheap Online Resources for Special Education Homeschooling (Peggy Ployhar)\nWith over 100 links to share\, families who are looking for resources on a budget will find practical information and resources for teaching a variety of students. \nLearning Difficulties\, Dyslexia\, ADD/ADHD — There is Hope for Change (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nDo you suspect Dyslexia/ADD/ADHD or other learning labels? Labels typically come from a list of symptoms\, not a “disease” or “brain abnormality.” Dr. Jan will guide you through the root causes of symptomatic labels and give practical skills for training your child’s brain to eliminate the symptoms. Open a brilliant future for your child through understanding how the brain works…or why it doesn’t currently seem to be working so well. The goal of this workshop is to help you unlock your child’s full potential. \nWhat Can I Do To Help My Child Be Successful At Co-op? (Dawn Spence)\nPractical strategies to help your child to have a positive co-op experience \nTo read speaker bios and register\, visit https://californiahomeschoolconventions.com/special-needs-solutions/

SUMMARY:Used Resources and Clothing Exchange
DESCRIPTION:Depending on public health orders in place at the time\, we have plans! \nPlan A – if we are not able to have gatherings of any size\, we will do 45 minute one family at a time appointments to browse and purchase resources. \nPlan B – if we are able to have limited gatherings\, we will do 45 minute appointments for the number allowed\, following what guidelines are in place at the time. \nRSVP for your time slot with this Google Doc sign up sheet. The appointments are one hour apart to give me 15 minutes  to do some sanitizing between appointments. \nThe week ahead\, make arrangements with me to drop off your items. I will arrange them the morning of the event. \nFor books and other resources\, to make things simple\, please: \n\nOrganize what you want to sell or give away in boxes for easy browsing and less touching.\nPrice everything or have one price for everything in the box\, clearly marked.\nInclude a jar or envelope with your name on it.\n\nWe will have a free resources table. Please box your free stuff separately and mark it as free. Whatever is not taken at the end of the event will be either used to build our free curriculum loaning library or taken to Abednego Book Shoppe for trade credit for ACHEV members to enjoy in the future. \nFor clothing: \n\nHangers are helpful. I’d like to hang as much as possible for less touching and easier browsing.\nFree items do not need to be marked. Whatever is not taken at the end of the event will be donated to ministry to be determined.\nFor sales items need to be securely marked with your name so that $ can go in your jar or envelope\, or it can be returned to you after the event if it does not sell\n\nAfter the event\, we can make arrangements to return any items that did not sell that you want back. \nThank you for being a resourceful (a pun!) group\, and being willing to try something new this year so we can still exchange our treasures despite not being able to have our usual big event at a park!
