SUMMARY:Semi-Formal Christmas Dance at House of Dance
DESCRIPTION:What: We would like to invite you to the annual ACHEV Christmas Dance at House of Dance in Ventura.  This is a semi-formal event. There are a few things that will be a little different about this dance and will be described more below\, but please pay attention that you must: \n\nRSVP required by using this Sign Up Sheet.\nBe on time – please arrive between 6:45-6:55 to check in at the front.\nParticipate in the dance lesson that begins at 7pm\, and most importantly…\nCome prepared to dance the night away with new friends\, have a good attitude and do your best!\n\nWe will start with a salsa lesson from 7-7:30.   Then there will be free dancing from 7:30-9:15.  There will be a variety of Christmas tunes and will include the following dances: East Coast Swing\, Single Time Swing\, Cha Cha\, Foxtrot\, Waltz\, Night Club Two-Step\, and salsa.  We will also be doing some group dances. \nWhen:  Saturday\, December 3rd\, from 7pm-9:15pm. \nAfter Party: The Dance ends at 9:15 and then we will head straight over to the Collier Home for fun and food.  Please join us. 1379 Avenida de Aprisa\, Camarillo\, CA 93010.  Their home is conveniently off the Central Ave. exit.  RSVP and sign up for a pot luck item is appreciated.   The after-party ends by 11:45. \nWhere: House of Dance: 3007 Bunsen Ave Ste E\, Ventura\, CA https://www.pmhouseofdance.com/ \nCost: $15 per student and includes a 30 minute professional dance lesson at the beginning from 7:00-7:30\, taught by Patricia Monico. \n***Payment in advance is not required\, but is appreciated.  I will be collecting all the money for this dance\, and it will all go to House of Dance.  To pay in advance\, you can use following methods: \n\nZelle (Preferred) bonnieadair@verizon.net or 805-504-6457\nPaypal at https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/bonniemaeadair?locale.x=en_US\nMail me a check to: Bonnie Adair 174 Granada Street\, Camarillo\, CA 93010\nMeet up with me in person and give me cash or check\n\nRefunds: If you decide to pay in advance\, I will gladly give you a refund or return your check if you notify me by Noon on the day of the dance if you are unable to come.  Please don’t No-Show. \nWho: ACHEV members 6th Grade and up\, ACHEV parents\, and ACHEV graduates are also welcome.  Parents are welcome to join in the dancing.  *Please do not bring younger siblings to this dance.  Babes in arms OK.  The dances are much more fun if we have close to the same number of boys and girls.  If the list of girls gets too heavy\, I may start a waitlist. \nGuests:  This is a private party.  ACHEV members may invite guests.  Please clear/sign up your guests by entering their information on the sign up sheet and confirm that they have read the dress code and etiquette.  The information is available below and is also included on the sign-up sheet. \nChaperones: Each student under 18 must have a parent chaperone.  You may have another parent chaperone in your place.  Chaperones are responsible for the behavior and safety of their children for the duration of the event.  Please make sure to include chaperone names for your student(s) on the sign up sheet. \nWhat to Bring: Your own water bottles and your own personal snacks to keep at your table if you desire.  There will be no community snacks served.  We will have water and cups available for refilling your water bottles\, or in case someone forgets theirs.  Girls\, if you are going to wear heels\, please bring a pair of more comfortable shoes in case your feet can’t stand it anymore.  This might be a good idea for boys\, too\, if they are wearing a new pair of dress shoes.  You will not be allowed to go barefoot or socks only. \n\nBe on time.  The dances will go much more smoothly and be more fun if everyone is on time for the dance lesson at 7. Do not sign up for this dance if you cannot be on time.\nPlease carefully read the dress code and etiquette guidelines below.\n\nDress Code: \nWe do not want to have to send anyone home\, so please\, follow the guidelines.  If you are having trouble\, reach out and ask questions or ask to borrow something. \nBoys: \n\nCollared shirts (button-up or polo)\, long sleeve or short sleeved.\nSlacks\, NO jeans.  This is a semi-formal dance.  Do not wear pants that look like jeans.  Slacks have slits for back pockets\, not sewn on pockets as jeans do.  Slacks are pressed with a crease down the front center.\nClosed toe shoes: Absolutely no flip flops\, socks or bare feet.   It is hard to dance when your shoes are super sticky/grippy on the dance floor.  If you don’t have dress/dance shoes\, Converse/Keds type shoes work well.\n\nGirls: \n\n Skirts or dresses knee length or longer. (This means touching the top of the knee\, regardless of leggings.) If there is a lace overlay\, the skirt underneath (solid fabric) needs to touch the knee.\nSlits in skirts cannot rise above the top of the knee.\nLeggings or shorts are required if the skirt rises past the knees while twirling.  It’s a good policy to wear shorts or leggings under your skirts regardless of length.\nNo low-cut\, strapless\, backless\, or halter tops. Straps need to be at least one inch wide. No exposed cleavage or bra straps.  If you aren’t sure\, wear a cardigan over your dress.\nNo pants (other than leggings under your skirt or dress).\nClosed toe shoes are recommended.  We recommend no slingback shoes.  Absolutely no flip flops\, socks\, or bare feet.  It is hard to dance when your shoes are super sticky/grippy on the dance floor.   If you don’t have dress/dance shoes\, Converse/Keds type shoes work well.  If the girls want to wear heels\, please bring a second pair of shoes that will be more comfortable in case they need/want to remove their heels.\n\nPlease view the visual dress code: ACHEV Dress Code tailored for Christmas Semi-Formal \nBasic Dance Etiquette.  Please go over this with your dancers: \nFor Boys: \n\nAsk a variety of girls to dance.  They are waiting for you to ask.  Don’t drag your feet in getting around to asking someone\, and don’t spend the evening standing around.  It’s not fair to the girls.  The time goes by quickly!\nYou may be nervous asking a girl to dance. That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor.\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance.\n\nFor Girls: \n\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard and nerve wracking for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by opening up your circle.\n\nFor Both: \n\nIf you decline an offer to dance\, that means you will sit out the entire dance.\nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations.\nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime.\nA Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance.  The boys are to do the asking unless we announce a Sadie Hawkins dance.\n\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Parent's Dance Workshop
DESCRIPTION:ACHEV Parents\, this class is just for you!!  In this one time workshop\, we will learn the basics of one dance.  I am thinking either Nightclub Two-Step (a slower dance) or East Coast Swing (little faster but not too fast)\, but if you sign up\, I would really like to know if you have a preference and what you would like to learn.  In this class\, we will not be rotating partners\, so you will only be dancing with your sweetheart =)  It might be fun to make this a group date and go out to eat together either before or after the class. \nDid you guys know that ACHEV parents are always welcome at our dances and are welcome to dance as well as chaperone?  If you take this class\, you will have at least one dance style that you can practice out on the floor at our ACHEV dances. =)  The next ACHEV dance is 12/3/22 so this class will be just in time to get you ready. \nIf this class interests you\, please sign up as soon as possible.  I would like to know within a couple of weeks if we have enough couples to move forward with the class\, so that I can give the dance studio enough notice if we need to cancel.  Thanks! \nWho: ACHEV Parents/Couples only\, no singles (must have a partner).   Titus 2 / Retired ACHEV couples welcome. \nCost: $ 30 per couple.  Pay when you arrive or pay ahead via  Venmo@Patricia-Monico  or Zelle 805-650-2719 \nSign Up Here\nEmail or Text Bonnie with questions bonnieadair@verizon.net 805-504-6457 \n  \n

SUMMARY:Colonial Farm Life Field Trip at Riley's Farm
DESCRIPTION:Woo hoo!  I scheduled a field trip to the amazing Riley’s Farm!  If you haven’t heard of Riley’s Farm\, it is owned and run by a Christian family who are passionate about history and freedom.    If you want to know more about Riley’s Farm you van visit their website https://rileysfarm.com/ . \nWhat: Colonial Farm Life Field Trip: this is an amazing living history program.  This autumn field trip represents an exploration of American\ncolonial life emphasizing the cultural and domestic pursuits of hearth cooking\, children’s period games\, cider pressing\, weaving\, etiquette\, quill calligraphy and more. Read all the fun details here: \nWho: All ACHEV members are welcome.  Riley’s Farm is very family and homeschool friendly.  This field trip will be fun for all ages\, but is aimed at pre-k to 4th grade.  It is better suited to younger kids than the Revolutionary War Field Trip we went on last year.  This is a fun field trip to bring Grandma and Grandpa along for\, especially if they are into history and watching your kids do homeschooley stuff =) \nTime: The field trip runs from 10am-12pm. You must arrive at least 15 minutes early\, by 9:45am.  It is a long drive so give yourself plenty of time to arrive and account for traffic.  You will want to have time to visit the restroom before we start and maybe place a pie or lunch order for later.  I am going to need some time to check everyone in and make sure everyone has their stickers showing what group they belong to.  The drive is admittedly very long (but very much worth it)\, so please leave early enough to allow time for traffic or other unforeseen delays. \nHow Much: $17 per person\, including adults\, paid in advance.  If we get 30+ people\, the price goes down to $15 per person. \nBabies/toddlers 2 years old and younger are free.  If they are 3 and over\, they need a ticket.  This is a significant discount per person for registering as a group of 15+.  I need at least 15 people paid by 9/23/22 to make this happen.  I have to sign a contract and personally guarantee payment as well as make a deposit\, so I have to collect payment in advance from everyone by September 23rd.   They will only adjust 10% of the total price for no-shows/cancellations after that date\, which depending on our numbers\, will mean that I can only afford to refund maybe 2 tickets if there are no-shows or last minute cancellations. You can send a check to Bonnie Adair at 174 Granada Street\, Camarillo\, CA 93010\, meet up with me in person and give me cash or check\, send me $ via Zelle \, or Paypal me at https://paypal.me/bonniemaeadair?locale.x=en_US  .  I prefer cash or check or to use Zelle if possible (I cannot use Venmo\, sorry)  The cell number for my Zelle account is 805-504-6457.  You can also use my email address to Zelle me $\,  bonnieadair@verizon.net \nWhere: 12261 S. Oak Glen Rd.\, Oak Glen\, CA 92399 ***GPS Databases are often wrong for the farm\, please use their directions https://rileysfarm.com/index.php/map/ \nLunch:  You may pack your own lunch and leave it in the car.  We will have access to a picnic area.  You may want to bring a blanket or chairs in case there aren’t any tables available.  You can also buy lunch from the bakery.  Their food and pies are really good\, by the way\, and I highly recommend them =)  I always buy an extra whole apple pie and whole chicken pot pie to take home for the next day.  Such a treat!  Also\, they recommend you order ahead of time (you can order online or on-site in the morning when we arrive. Here is the most current menu and should be a close idea of what will be available https://rileysfarm.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/cc_menu_2wide_web.jpg \nMisc: This field trip is outdoors.  Please check the weather ahead of time\, wear layers\, bring hats and sunscreen\, extra water and snacks\, and be prepared for a long day. \nIf you want to be a weekend of it\, and spend the night in the Oak Glen area\, Riley’s Farm is having a Harvest Feast 18th Century Living History dinner with historical drama\, period appropriate live music and dancing.  See the details for that here.  Tickets for the dinner need to be purchased in advance online before they sell out.   That’s what we are planning to do to make the most of our trip out there.  I am also going to look up some other interesting things to do or see nearby.  We’d love to have some friends join us for the dinner. \nField Trip Sign Up Here \nPlease email me if you have any questions\, or need help signing up. \n \nThanks\, \nBonnie Adair \n805-504-6457

SUMMARY:Back to School Dance
DESCRIPTION:Let’s celebrate Back to School with dancing! \nThe ACHEV Back to School Dance is ballroom and swing dancing for 6th grade and older. It will be held at the beautiful Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura\, which has a generous stage and dance floor\, and beautiful view from the patio area. \nThere are many important details so you will be prepared to have the very best time! Please read carefully\, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. The organizers are happy to answer your questions. \nACHEV has guidelines for events. They are included in full on the “keep this” page of your membership agreement. Here are the points that are relevant to dances: \n\nBe punctual as a courtesy to other members and our hosts.\nParents are responsible for their children’s behavior and safety for the duration of the gathering. This responsibility may be delegated to another parent if necessary. No drop offs.\nAttire should be modest and appropriate for the occasion.\nBe respectful of both private and public property.\nPlease clean up after yourself at all events.\nThank the individuals who made the event possible.\nACHEV activities are for members only\, unless otherwise stated.\n\nParent chaperones are required for this dance. If you are unable to attend\, you may find another parent ahead of time to chaperone in your place. Thank you. \nNo Younger Siblings.  This event is for 6th grade and up only.  Younger siblings are not permitted at this event.  Babes in arms/nursing babies are okay. \nThank you for bringing a finger food to share. It will help us tremendously if you bring them on a serving plate or bowl (disposable if you prefer) to make it presentable and easy for those volunteering to manage the refreshment tables. ACHEV does not have an inventory of serving plates. Thank you. \nYou may invite friends you believe would enjoy this dance. Guests must be cleared in advance with the organizers. Please share all the information with your guests so they are prepared. Thank you. \nACHEV has a dress code for dances. This is the dress code for the Back to School Dance. It is enforced upon entrance. Please do your best to come prepared\, and be sure to share this with your invited guests. A good rule of thumb is if you are unsure\, change into something that clearly meets dress code. Thank you for helping us uphold the dress code. \n \nThank you for sharing dance etiquette with your children and invited guests. \nFor Boys: \n\nAsk a variety of girls to dance.  They are waiting for you to ask\,  Smile\, offer your hand\, and ask if she would like to dance.\nYou may be nervous asking a girl to dance. That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance.\n\nFor Girls: \n\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard and nerve-wracking for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by opening up your circle.\n\nFor Both: \n\nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations and help them learn a few of the steps.\nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime.\nA Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance.  The boys are to do the asking unless we announce a Sadie Hawkins dance.\n\nVolunteers are needed to make the evening run smoothly. We need you. There are many ways to help. \nhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pBf954xeGrOzkcYKClHs6X173mzR183q8g5AZV_4lkI/edit?usp=sharing \n\n\n\nIf you have never been to an ACHEV dance\, and have never taken dance lessons with us\, here are some video links that you can check out to help you learn the basic steps to most of the music we will be playing. You do not have to learn these steps\, but if you feel like this would be helpful to you\, give it a try. We will also be doing a few group & line dances that will hopefully get everyone dancing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEast Coast Swing: The first two videos show the basic step and the basic turn/side pass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNYLxnVOJak&list=PLLALQuK1NDrjk85UjKkAOCA-VDy_zI5vt&index=8\, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm3wJSDlzW4&list=PLLALQuK1NDrjk85UjKkAOCA-VDy_zI5vt&index=23\, This is an especially good video that shows some “don’ts” as well as some important tips for leaders (boys). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF54hIuRmpk\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSingle Time Swing: This type of swing is danced to the faster music. Here’s a 10 min video that shows the basic step \, timing\, and a couple different turns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8Md_wwCKIY&list=PLFd7u4YGuG-iTXx7jjk423nW21JXH8ndQ\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCha Cha: Here is the basic step and timing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pMjX6VKRwk Here is the cross body lead that some of the kids learned in our dance classes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EubkwC6xj10 and here is a basic turn for the ladies but the boys need to watch this also so they know how to lead the ladies into it and what they need to do while she makes her turn =) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55xMEAwvXI4\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaltz: Basic box step https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBKTN6c_MEQ and the underarm turn (very different than a swing turn so please watch only 2.5 minutes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjFR9E5CHaM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNightclub 2 Step: This is a slower dance that is easy to learn. This is a great video that shows the basic step and how to dance with a partner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jMc1JGXQP8\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Moms Book Read & Discussion Night
DESCRIPTION:I have not had much time so slow down and free read lately. Maybe this is you too? However\, a book was just recommended to me recently\, Before We Were Yours\, by Lisa Wingate. I was intrigued how my friend was moved by this book and the clincher for me to read at this time in my life of busyness\, is that it was an easy read. Not necessarily the topic\, but the writing style. The book is based on a true story. \nFrom the authors website\, \n“Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann\, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization\, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country.” \nHere is a link to the author’s website that will give you some more details. \nhttps://lisawingate.com/books/before-we-were-yours/ \nThe book is readily available at libraries\, Thrift Book\, Amazon\, etc.. I ordered my book from the Ventura County Public Library and at the time it looked as though there were many copies. \nRead the book over the summer and plan for a meetup/book discussion with Alfresco Dining\, potluck style\, on the deck. \nWe will meet up on September 16\, at my residence at 6:00pm. Please let me know if you would like to join us for a wonderful evening of fellowship and food. Contact me by email\, canbucks@yahoo.com or phone\, 805-796-3092 and I will start an email group with more information\, for those\, who are interested. \nI look forward to seeing old and new faces. \nChristina Buck

SUMMARY:Fellowship and Support
DESCRIPTION:This is a time of fellowship and practical support… and light refreshments! \nThough we have some general topics earmarked for various meetings\, every meeting can be for everyone. There will be time the first half hour (6:30pm) before each of the main meetings (which begin at 7:00pm) to cover the basics of home education for anyone who is wondering\, so please feel free to invite your friends who are curious about home education to come early for the overview\, then all are welcome to stay for the friendship\, fellowship and food. \nThis year\, the meetings will most often be held at the Pineda’s home in Ventura\, not far from the community college. RSVP is helpful so we can have enough chairs ready for everyone\, or so we can reach you if something comes up. Thank you. RSVP to Susan at 805-407-6851 or must_sew@yahoo.com. \nThe vision is for parents in all stages of home education to come for fellowship\, to build the relationships it takes to persevere\, to have fun together\, and encourage each other. There is always laughter! There is always prayer! It is always a blessing. We look forward to seeing you! \nThese meetings will most often be held the first Friday of the month\, with exceptions for holidays. \nDates for the year and topics: \nSeptember 9\, 2022: Homeschooling the younger years\, including pre-school ages\, Kindergarten age\, and primary grades. If you have older kids\, please still come to help encourage those with younger kids\, make friends\, and enjoy the fellowship. \nOctober 7\, 2022: Helpful Hindsight – This is one of our most popular meetings. Each time we have this\, we invite a new panel from our Titus 2 moms\, experienced home educators who have graduated their youngest. They have so much to share and are excited to answer your questions and encourage you. This is for all stages of home education. Please come\, meet the panel\, and be blessed! \nNo meeting in November. Please come instead to the CHEA In the Neighborhood event ACHEV is hosting in Camarillo\, Saturday November 5\, 2022. \nDecember 2\, 2022: Fellowship and Folded Fabric Christmas Ornaments! Susan has a few new ornaments to share\, lots of fabric scraps and other supplies. You are welcome to come and craft\, or just relish the fun and fellowship. We’ll have hot cocoa and cookies. The Scandinavian Star pictured below doesn’t require any sewing\, only pressing and folding. There are a few that require minimal machine and/or hand sewing. Susan will have a couple of sewing machines set up and other supplies ready to share. \n \nNo meeting in January. Relax and recover from the holidays! \nFebruary 3\, 2023: The Christian Homeschool – This is a good time of year to course-correct\, re-visit goals\, priorities\, articulate or refine your philosophy of education\, and re-evaluate how we are all doing at incorporating faith and eternal values into homeschooling. This is for all ages and stages. We may bring in a guest speaker! \nMarch 3\, 2023: Homeschooling Through High School – This is a very practical meeting in which we cover course descriptions\, transcripts\, required and recommended record-keeping\, but also dive into why homeschooling high school is an incredible opportunity to prepare your children for what comes after high school. We might have a guest speaker for this meeting. \nNo meeting in April. Happy Easter! \nMay 5\, 2023: Helpful Hindsight – A new panel of Titus 2 moms will join us for this much loved meeting in which you get to hear their stories\, learn from their wisdom and experience\, and ask the hard questions. This is a great meeting for all ages and stages.

That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance.\n\nFor Girls: \n\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard and nerve wracking for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by opening up your circle.\nPlease limit the amount of dancing you do with your girl-friends and only do it if there are no boys available to dance with.\n\nFor Both: \n\nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations.\nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime.\nA Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance.  The boys are to do the asking unless we announce a Sadie Hawkins dance.\nIt is okay to sit out for a dance\, but remember\, we are here to dance.  This is a special occasion\, and there will be time for goofing around\, chatting and socializing another time.  Please come to the after party for some food and social time!
