SUMMARY:(No support meeting January)
DESCRIPTION:We’re not meeting in January. See you next month\, Lord willing!\nThis is not an ACHEV sponsored event. It is a church small group for homeschool parents\, open to the church and the community. ACHEV parents are welcome.\nBefore the public health order\, we would open our home to ACHEV parents about one evening a month for support meetings on a variety of topics throughout the year. While we have adapted by offering shorter weekly support with Tips at Two on Zoom\, we sure miss being able to meet in person. \nNow that churches are permitted to host small groups of ten or less\, I’ve decided to lead a small group at Encounter\, a homeschool support group! Tips at Two will continue as long as it is needed. These additional monthly meetings will be for deeper discussions and fellowship support in person. I am open to ideas\, topics\, speaker suggestions\, etc. \nThis will be held 2nd Tuesday evenings monthly at Encounter\, located at 6950 Ralston Avenue (corner of Johnson and Ralston) in Ventura\, room 301\, which is in the modular building closest to the small parking lot on Johnson Avenue. \nIf you would like to register at the church website\, visit https://encounterlife.churchcenter.com/registrations/events/548502 and scroll down to find the homeschool support group. Registration is not essential\, but registered members of the group will have first chance to RSVP for each meeting. Please let me know if you have any questions. \nDates for the year – RSVP to Susan at 805-407-6851. \n10/13/2020 – New to homeschooling? Please come and invite a friend who is curious about home education. RSVP to Susan Pineda to make sure there is space for you. \n11/10/2020 – Planning and scheduling for a peaceful and efficient homeschool \n12/8/2020 – Topic TBD \n1/12/2021 – Topic TBD \n2/9/2021 – Topic TBD \n3/9/2021 – Topic TBD \n4/13/2021 – Topic TBD \n5/11/2021 – Topic TBD \nI’ll edit with topics for discussion\, guest speakers\, etc. as the year progresses. \nI look forward to supporting homeschool parents in person in a safe and permitted place! Thank you for your patience. I appreciate your prayers as we plan. \nSusan Pineda

SUMMARY:CHEA's Special Needs Mini-Con
DESCRIPTION:Part of the CHEA Summer Series 2020\n\n\nMany people think of “special needs” as the same as learning disabilities\, and many of these learning differences require special teaching methods. But “special needs” encompasses much more than learning difficulties. It is a broad range of needs\, and a parent’s calling is to help children learn and fulfill their God-given mission. \nHundreds of families are successfully teaching their own children who have special needs. These special challenges are better handled in the loving environment of home. \nJoin us for this one-day mini-conference that will offer solutions for homeschooling families who teach students across a spectrum of special needs. \nREGISTRATION\nThe Main Track workshops are free to all\, with registration. The Members Only Track will offer additional live workshops and recordings exclusively as a benefit to those who are CHEA Members (you can become a member during event registration). While free\, registration is required to access both the Main Track and Members Only Track. \nRegister Now \nMAIN TRACK WORKSHOPS (FREE TO ALL)\nThe Essentials of Special Education Homeschool (Peggy Ployhar)\nGeared toward new homeschoolers\, learn how to get started on the right track and avoid common pitfalls of homeschooling a child with special needs. The basics of homeschooling high school will also be covered. \nFoundation of Learning Styles (More than Auditory\, Visual\, and Kinesthetic) (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nA child’s learning abilities increase when their brain is properly stimulated. Dr. Jan shares how to optimize the brain for better performance in academics and in life. Discover the most efficient way to teach math operations\, math facts\, reading\, spelling\, and penmanship. Learn practical techniques ensuring higher performance whether gifted\, typical\, or challenged. \nSUCCESSFULLY Homeschooling Your Child with Learning Differences (Jill Stowell) \nMEMBERS ONLY TRACK WORKSHOPS (AVAILABLE TO CHEA MEMBERS)\nAuditory\, What? (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nHave you ever talked to your child and he looks right at you but goes off and does something totally different? You might ask yourself: Is this a discipline issue? Do I need to get his hearing checked? What has happened to his character? In this workshop\, discover reasons why this is happening and what can be done to remedy the situation. \nThe Benefits of Writing An IEP for Your Child (Dawn Spence)\nSetting goals that can provide a roadmap to your child’s education \nBreaking the Myths and Walking in the Shoes of Students with Dyslexia\, Learning\, and Attention Challenges (Jill Stowell)\nDuring this simulation workshop\, experience for yourself what it might feel like to have an attention deficit\, live in a world of language when you have an auditory processing disorder\, or decipher a page of text through the eyes of a student with dyslexia. These experiences can be eye opening and transformational for parents of children who struggle with these and other learning challenges.\n \nCustomizing Your Curriculum (Peggy Ployhar)\nWith a focus on individualizing education\, parents will receive practical tips for how to do that for unique children based on their strengths while still remediating areas of learning difficulties. \nCheap Online Resources for Special Education Homeschooling (Peggy Ployhar)\nWith over 100 links to share\, families who are looking for resources on a budget will find practical information and resources for teaching a variety of students. \nLearning Difficulties\, Dyslexia\, ADD/ADHD — There is Hope for Change (Dr. Jan Bedell)\nDo you suspect Dyslexia/ADD/ADHD or other learning labels? Labels typically come from a list of symptoms\, not a “disease” or “brain abnormality.” Dr. Jan will guide you through the root causes of symptomatic labels and give practical skills for training your child’s brain to eliminate the symptoms. Open a brilliant future for your child through understanding how the brain works…or why it doesn’t currently seem to be working so well. The goal of this workshop is to help you unlock your child’s full potential. \nWhat Can I Do To Help My Child Be Successful At Co-op? (Dawn Spence)\nPractical strategies to help your child to have a positive co-op experience \nTo read speaker bios and register\, visit https://californiahomeschoolconventions.com/special-needs-solutions/

SUMMARY:CHEA's Homeschooling and the Church Mini-Con
DESCRIPTION:Part of CHEA’s Summer Series 2020\nVirtually every child in our nation has spent the last few months homeschooling. Some parents had already chosen private Christian home education because of what is happening in our public schools–from graphic sex education to values that do not align with our Christian faith to the promotion of agendas of powerful and vocal special interest groups. Others are now considering bringing their children home out of concern for what the classroom environment will look like when schools resume. \nThis raises some questions for churches. What can the church do to help? Does the church have a role to play? Is homeschooling a viable option for Christian parents? \nThe Bible says that parents are responsible for their children’s upbringing and education. Regardless of the form of education (public or private)\, the responsibility rests on parents to see that their children are educated. Can we hope to pass our faith and a biblical worldview on to our children when they are being educated in a godless environment? Can we expect our children to have an abiding faith when schools teach or infer that God belongs in the compartments of home and church\, but not in schools or the greater society? \nREGISTRATION\nWhile this event is free\, registration is required. Once registered\, you will receive information about logging in to our Zoom workshop. \nRegister Now \nMEET THE SPEAKERS\nBrad Dacus\, Esq.\nBrad Dacus is the President and Founder of the Pacific Justice Institute (PJI). He served as Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Phil Gramm\, and went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Texas\, School of Law. Brad can be heard weekly on The Dacus Report on more than 170 radio stations across the country. His varied public speaking opportunities include public debate and testifying before the United States House of Representatives in Washington\, D.C. He has also testified numerous times before the California State Legislature on legislation affecting religious freedom and parents’ rights. He was presented an honorary Doctorate of Religious Freedom and Family Rights degree from California Baptist University in recognition of his commitment to faith and justice and his work protecting parental rights and religious freedom through the Pacific Justice Institute. \n \nJeff Byers\nJeff and his wife\, Kerry. have been married for more than 36 years and have homeschooled their five children for more than 30 years\, graduating their last child in 2019. Jeff was ordained in ministry in 1993 and\, together with his wife\, they incorporated and founded God’s Word Church. Over the years\, they have run homeschool support groups as well as founded two PSPs. They also serve on CHEA’s Regional Advisory Board in the High Desert.

SUMMARY:Prayer Evening
DESCRIPTION:Please join us in prayer Friday evening\, 6/7\, for the Garcia family. Joel and Ondreea Garcia joined ACHEV last year. We have enjoyed getting to know Ondreea and her daughters at park day. Ondreea shared the following heartbreaking need for prayer and support\, \n“Sadly\, my daughter-in-law took her own life. She left behind my son and 17 month old grandson. If you could share a prayer request for them\, it would mean a lot.” \nWhile we will dedicate the evening to prayer for the Garcia family\, there will be time to pray for whatever is burdening you. There is nothing too big or too small for God. Scripture tells us He wants us to bring everything to Him in prayer. Let us do that together. \nSo I can have enough chairs ready\, please let me know you are coming. ~ Susan Pineda (805) 407-6851 or must_sew@yahoo.com.

SUMMARY:Special Speaker Event: Making the Grade\, Rebecca Kocsis of CHEA
DESCRIPTION:ACHEV has invited Rebecca Kocsis to speak to ACHEV and the greater homeschool community in Ventura. Please come\, invite your friends\, and be prepared for a lovely evening of encouragement with Rebecca. A love offering will be taken to help cover Rebecca’s travel expenses. \n\nRebecca’s talk: Making the Grade – Does God really expect us to be perfect because we homeschool? Rather\, as home educators\, we often expect perfection from ourselves. There’s nothing wrong with high expectations. But how do we handle falling short of them? Do we take it to the cross? Or do we give ourselves a big fat F? Let’s take a look at this from a Biblical perspective.\n\nRebecca Kocsis and her beloved\, Ed\, homeschooled all five of their children\, graduating their youngest in 2006 from their homeschool. They are now the proud grandparents of an ever-growing tribe of energetic boys and girls (11 to date) who are their greatest delight. Rebecca served for 15 years as a PSP administrator and for several years on CHEA’s Regional Advisory Board. In addition to serving on CHEA’s board of directors\, she currently serves as Support Network Director and General Manager. She is the author of the devotional booklet Let Not Your Feathers Be Ruffled.

SUMMARY:Support Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Greg and Susan Pineda are opening their home several third Friday nights throughout the year for support meetings on various topics\, some for all parents\, others just for the moms. Do you have a topic idea? Contact Susan Pineda. \nTonight’s meeting is just for the moms. We will be talking about women’s health issues. \nBeing a woman can be a bit of a roller coaster ride! Puberty\, child-bearing\, peri-menopause\, menopause – all these years and stages are important\, but can be daunting. We can learn from each other\, share our struggles\, our experience\, our triumphs\, and help each other through. Some of you who have been in ACHEV for a few years may remember I had to pretty much drop everything to recover from a women’s health issue from which I honestly had no idea if I could recover. Now that I am on the other side of the problem\, I am ready to share my story and what I learned from it both physically and spiritually. I pray you may learn something from my experience. I hope others will also share experiences and wisdom as well. We have much to learn from each other. \nWhether everything is going fantastic for you in the women’s health department\, or if you feel like everything is falling apart\, or somewhere in the middle\, please come. Come to listen\, share\, and encourage. There will be no judgement\, only support. \nPlease RSVP so I can have a comfy chair ready for you.

SUMMARY:Support Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Greg and Susan Pineda are opening their home several third Friday nights throughout the year for support meetings on various topics\, some for all parents\, others just for the moms. Do you have a topic idea? Contact Susan Pineda. \nFor January 18\, I am planning a mother-daughter evening for fun with braids. I have experience with French and Dutch braids\, including variations. For her first English Country Dance formal\, I braided my daughter’s very long hair into a Dutch crown with accent braids. She is grown and I miss braiding her hair. If you would like to learn or share what you know\, I’d love to have you. Bring your own hairbrush\, comb\, hairbands and a few bobby pins. If we need extra help\, we can watch some YouTube instructions. I look forward to braiding your hair! \nThis could be a great chance to try out some up-do ideas before the Of Winters Past ECD Formal coming up January 26. \nAdded bonus – This might be a great night to bring dresses or gowns we have for loan. I have a few my daughter outgrew that I keep on hand to loan. Maybe we can even get some of our costumes ready for the dance. I have a few dresses that might work for some girls and moms. \nSince I have limited space\, I need you to sign up so I can be prepared with seating.
