SUMMARY:Poverty Encounter Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:What: A group visit to Poverty Encounter\, an amazing ministry that I learned about while at the CHEA conference. \n“An immersive\, interactive experience\, Poverty Encounter provides a unique understanding of the impact of living in poverty\, and opportunities to make a difference.” \n\nEncountering Poverty\n\n\n\n\nby Lynn Phillips\, Poverty Encounter at Children’s Hunger Fund \nHave you ever heard your children say\, “I’m starving\,” “there’s nothing to eat\,” or “I don’t like this meal!”? Do you wish your children had a greater appreciation for what they have? As a homeschool mother of four\, it pained me to hear my boys’ lack of gratitude for all the Lord had given them. One of the reasons we homeschooled was to teach our kids about who God is and that they can play a part in His plans. My husband and I wondered how we could open our children’s eyes to the abundance they had before them. \nRead the rest of this article at http://www.homeschool411.com/family/encountering-poverty/ \nWhen: Tuesday\, December 10th\, 10 am-12 pm:  Please arrive 10 minutes before your reservation time and check in at the Poverty Encounter entrance of the building.  Each tour is 90 minutes with a 30-minute service activity during which guests will be able to pack food for families in need.  There is a considerable amount of walking and standing throughout the experience so please dress comfortably. \nCost: $7 per person ages 6 and up.  5 and under\, free.  Paid in advance.  Sales for this event will close two weeks before the event on November 26th at 10AM. This is what they ask so that they can work out scheduling in preparation for our event.   They have created a special link just for our group\, to purchase tickets online. \nTo sign up for this field trip: \,Visit this link  and purchase your tickets now.  Then\, please enter your information on this Google Sheet \nMore Info: Poverty Encounter FIeld Trip Info \n

SUMMARY:JPL Field Trip - NASA Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena
DESCRIPTION:What: Guided tour of Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, website: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/ \n“The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is a unique national research facility that carries out robotic space and Earth science missions. JPL helped open the Space Age by developing America’s first Earth-orbiting science satellite\, creating the first successful interplanetary spacecraft\, and sending robotic missions to study all the planets in the solar system as well as asteroids\, comets and Earth’s moon. In addition to its missions\, JPL developed and manages NASA’s Deep Space Network\, a worldwide system of antennas that communicates with interplanetary spacecraft.” \n“All tours commonly include a multimedia presentation on JPL entitled “Journey to the Planets and Beyond\,” which provides an overview of the Laboratory’s activities and accomplishments. Guests may also visit the von Karman Visitor Center\, the Space Flight Operations Facility\, and the Spacecraft Assembly Facility.” \nSign up deadline: Sunday October 6\, 2019 \nPlease read this entire notice before signing up on the Google below where it says “Event Website” \nTime: Please arrive at  9:10 AM to check in and use restrooms. We will enter promptly at 9:30 PM. Tour will end by 12:00 PM. \nWho: Grades 3-12.  *Younger siblings with discretion \n*This tour is geared towards third grade and up.  Older and younger siblings and even babies may come\, but please consider these factors when deciding whether to bring your younger children: \n1) The subject matter may be boring to younger children if they do not have an interest in the topic.  Your children need to be able to sit/stand still and be quiet. \n2) The tour will last 2 to 2.5 hours \n3) If anyone needs to use the restroom during the tour\, the whole tour must stop and wait. \n4) We cannot go anywhere in the facility unaccompanied by the tour guide\, so if a child becomes disruptive\, you will not be able to remove them.  You would also not be able to stop and nurse a baby without the whole tour having to wait for you. \n5) There is considerable walking\, standing\, and stair climbing in this tour. \n6) If you decide to bring a younger sibling\, even a baby\, you need to add them to the roster. \n7) You know your child best and if this tour will be something they will enjoy. \nCost: FREE \nLocation: 4800 Oak Grove Drive\, Pasadena\, CA 91109\, Directions: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/about_JPL/maps.php \nStreet address for use in online map searches:\n4800 Oak Grove Drive\nLa Cañada Flintridge\, CA 91011 \nContact Person: bonnieadair@verizon.net\, 805-504-6457 \n**Important Notes**: \nYou must commit to this event. The final roster will be submitted 4 weeks before the tour and changes cannot be made once finalized. Please read the information below thoroughly before signing up. \nAs the tour organizer I have been told that you must read the following information:\n\nAll US citizens 18 years of age or older visiting JPL MUST present official\, government-issued photo identification\, such as a driver’s license or passport\, before being allowed entry.\nFederal security requirements insist that you provide this office with a roster (maximum 40 persons) ONE MONTH before the tour. We require the full name and country of citizenship for all adults\, and full name for those under the age of 18. Anyone not on our approved roster will not be allowed on to the facility. *Note: Substituting roster names the day of the tour is not allowed*\nAll non-US citizens (Foreign Nationals) 18 years of age or older MUST present either a passport or resident visa (green card) before being allowed entry. Individuals without the appropriate identification will NOT be admitted to the facility.\nThe tour includes considerable walking and stair climbing. Dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. Wheelchairs can be accommodated with prior notice. Cameras are allowed on the tour. *Note: All tours are conducted in English*\nTo control the traffic flow in our visitor reception center\, upon arrival\, please send only one representative into the visitor reception building to notify us of your arrival. Please try to limit and/or control your guests’ access to the JPL Store and restrooms.\nWe now have a “virtual” tour of JPL available online that is designed for students\, but available to everyone. We encourage you and your students/members to visit the site at: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/pso.

Because of this\, our field trips are self-guided with floor staff “MOXI Sparks” available to assist. \nField trips typically spend about 90 minutes in the museum and have access to the entire museum. The Innovation Workshop is a room located to right of the entrance on the first floor. We are welcome to explore the Workshop if there’s only 2 or 3 families in there at a time. The students may explore the Interactive Media Theater but must do so in groups of 7 or fewer and must be accompanied by a chaperone. \nFood and Drink: Please have your students leave their backpacks and water bottles in the car. We do not have any area within the museum for field trips to eat lunch. Most of our field trips that bring lunches\, eat at the grassy area right next to MOXI or walk down to the sitting wall at the beach. \nEngineering Exploration Lab Information: \nYour group will go into the Engineering Exploration lab at 10:00 AM for about 50 minutes. We only need to have teachers and a chaperone or two in the lab during this time. The other chaperones can either be out on the museum floor or they can grab a coffee out on State street (no food or drink allowed in the museum) and meet the group when they are finished at around 11:00 AM. \nParking:  Most of our visitors park in the train station parking lot (right next to MOXI). The first 75 minutes are free and every additional hour is $1.50. There is limited free street parking nearby. Additional parking can be found in any of the nearby Santa Barbara city lots. \nAddress:   125 State Street\, Santa Barbara\, CA 93101 \nMuseum Phone: 805.770.5012 \nWeb: moxi.org   |   @MOXIsb

It is also the headquarters for Division 1. Situated on the flight line of the airport\, the original station was inherited from the U.S. Air Force by the airport authority and leased at no cost to the fire district in exchange for fire protection on the airport. The station was originally built as a temporary building in 1954 and never updated. A new station 50\, located off Las Posas Road for better access to western Camarillo\, was completed in early 2001. The Airport Fire Station is currently the district’s hazardous materials response station and the District’s Hazmat Officer is assigned here. The aircraft fire/recue vehicle also operates out of here. In 2006 a Paramedic Squad with two Paramedic/Firefighters went into service at Station 50. It is staffed daily by five firefighters and houses an engine (Engine 50); a crash truck (Crash 50); a tractor-trailer Haz-Mat unit (Hazmat 50); a paramedic squad(Squad 50); a foam unit (Foam 50) and a utility pickup(Utility 50). Also assigned to Station 50 are two De-Con trailers used for decontamination at Haz-Mat incidents.

SUMMARY:CASA Getty Villa Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:CASA has invited ACHEV to join them on another fun field trip!  We are invited to go to the Getty Villa!\n\nDate: September 18\, 2019\n\nTime: 9:30 AM to 11 AM\n\nCost: free\n\nWho: ACHEV Members 6 years old & older\n\n\n\nDescription:\nLet’s kick off the school year together while viewing 7\,000 years of ancient art\, from the end of the Stone Age to the fall of the Roman Empire at a field trip to the Getty Villa! The Villa is a museum that is a recreation of an ancient Roman country house. “It offers a taste of life in the first century A.D.”\n\nOur guided visit at the Villa will be from 10-11 am and will be taught by a Gallery Docent. Please arrive at 9:30 to find parking and meet up with our group. During the visit\, students will study a limited number of objects in depth rather than tour the entire collection. Our lesson will be highly participatory. Students will work in small groups and engage in discussion\, writing\, role-playing\, and\, in some cases\, art-making activities. \nWe need at least 15 students to attend to guarantee a docent. I have reserved spots for 20 students so we can have two groups of 10 with two docents. Only one parent per family will be able to attend the tour since the gallery rooms are small. \nAfter the tour ends at 11\, their picnic area is reserved for us from 11-11:30. If you choose to bring a picnic lunch\, please bring it with you after you park and the Villa will store them for us. Please use small lunch bags since their storage is limited. \nAfter lunch\, their family room is open to us. This is a great “hands on” area especially for younger kids. Self guided audio tours are also available at this time. \nFor more information about the Villa\, please visit: https://www.getty.edu/visit/villa/ \nPlease contact Amy Leite if you are interested in joining this tour.

SUMMARY:Santa Barbara Botanic Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Garden’s school programs introduce children to the wonders of nature through interactive learning experiences. They hope to encourage a lifelong interest in plant science and ecology by fostering an appreciation and understanding of the natural world. \n\nDuring this 2 hour tour\, students have the opportunity to experience science first-hand in the Garden’s Plant Lab. Groups will have 30 minutes in an instructor-led lab to explore using our Zeiss microscopes\, models\, and dissecting equipment to view plant structures in a whole new light!  Outside of the lab\, our experienced docents will illuminate some of the amazing adaptations of our California native plants.  Each tour utilizes inquiry-based teaching methods to engage students with the natural world and inspire curiosity with their surroundings. \nThis field trip is for all ages.  Children will be divided into groups by age so that they can get the most out of the lab experience.  I estimate that we will have 9th-12th in their own group (if are you studying Biology\, this field trip is perfect for you!)\, mid- upper elementary and middle school together\, and the youngest kids (pk- 2) will be in their own small group.  If your child is too young to sit still and participate in the lab portion\, you are welcome to explore the garden just outside of the classroom while older students are participating in the lab.  You are also welcome to stay inside the classroom and watch\, but please be respectful and wait outside with your little ones if they become disruptive.  The walking tour is appropriate for all ages\, but keep in mind that the grounds are not stroller friendly (there are steps\, hills and rugged terrain in some areas) and you will need to carry babies and little kids if they get tired. \n\nLinks to educational resources\, including a downloadable wildflower coloring book : https://www.sbbg.org/learn-discover/school-programs/curriculum-resources \nCost: This field trip costs $125 for any group size up to 30 children.   So\, the more children we have participate\, the lower the cost per person.  I have personally paid for this in advance.  This is a new requirement they have due to the frequency of last minute cancellations.  I can only get my money back with 6 weeks’ notice. of cancellation.  I need to see that there is enough interest in this field trip well in advance\, so please do not wait until the last minute to sign up\, or it may get cancelled.  However\, please keep in mind that when you sign up\, you are expected to be there and make this a priority on your calendar.   You won’t want to miss this field trip anyways\, this is a wonderful place to visit and explore\, and they do a great job with the lab!   Considering the educational experience that is provided\, and their regular admission prices\, this is a really good deal. \nSign up on the Google Sheet linked below.  You only need to sign up students who will be participating.  Parents and babies/toddlers do not need to be signed up\, but I would appreciate knowing if you will have little ones tagging along.  If you want to bring an extra adult\, like Dad or a grandparent\, please check with me first.  We need to be mindful that our group size does not get too large.  They do not have limits on chaperones\, and we don’t want to give them a reason to make any new rules.

SUMMARY:Tree Walk\, Biology/Species Identification Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Come spend a day with us in beautiful Solvang at the Hans Christian Anderson Park for a Treewalk sponsored by NatureTrack: \n“The not-for-profit NatureTrack advocates the educational approach of noted author and educator David Sobel that fosters a child’s love of the earth while also developing a child’s academic and social competence. David Sobel’s most recent book “Place-Based Education: Connecting Classrooms & Communities” offers scientific and anecdotal evidence that placed-based education is successfully meeting\, and in many cases surpassing\, the various standards and mandates that are increasingly a part of educational reform in this country.” \nYou can read more about NatureTrack here: https://naturetrack.org/about/ \nThey are arranging docents for us to focus on biology and tree species identification. \nCost: Free \nWho: Everyone \nTime:  Field Trip Begins at 10:30\, please arrive by 10:15 \nAdditional information/What to bring: \n\nWe will be splitting up into two groups so that the docents can give plenty of attention to each student.  We have also been instructed to “make large\, legible nametags that adhere or attach well to the students.(Please also make them for adults and denote if Teacher\, Parent\, or Aide)”  I will make the nametags for everyone who is signed up.  I will probably make a necklace with yarn and cardstock\, but if you and your kids want to make your own name tags for fun\, let me know.  I don’t think the sticker ones we usually use is what they are looking for.\n We will be eating lunch on the trail\, as I understand it.  They ask that each student has their own backpack with two water bottles and lunch.   Just make sure you bring enough food and water for yourself and your kids with you on the walk – if you want to carry it all\, or have your kids carry their own is up to you.\nParents attending will be asked to participate in all activities with the exception of answering questions intended for the students!\nStudents are discouraged from bringing cell phones or cameras with them on the trail.  Parents may have a cell phone/camera\, but they would like parents to set a good example in not using them on the trip.  I think it is fine for the parents to take some pictures or use a cell phone if necessary\, but please make sure it is not a distraction.\n Participants should wear long pants\, closed toed sturdy shoes\, a hat and sunscreen.\nIf you have any questions about this field trip\, email me at bonnieadair@verizon.net so I can be sure to ask.\n\nOptional: Mrs. Tromans will lead us in a nature art project after we are done with our docent led walk.  This will be a great opportunity for the kids to process what we have learned\, make something for their school portfolio\, and maybe even make some art to submit for our upcoming fine arts festival in May.  Bring some colored pencils and your nature sketch book if you have them.  Another idea I had is to visit Ostrich Land. https://www.ostrichlandusa.com/ \, and we could even meet up together for breakfast before the field trip if any of you are adventurous/crazy enough to get up and go that early =) \nSign Up:  The more the merrier! We would really like to have some more families join us.  I know it’s a drive\, but Solvang is a wonderful place to visit\, Hans Christian Anderson Park is awesome\, and I am really excited about this nature field trip.  I have not been able to find any comparable field trip offerings in Ventura County.

SUMMARY:Build a Buckyball Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What: STEM Field trip to the UCSB Materials Research Lab.  This workshop is especially for you if you are studying chemistry.  Personally\, we are studying biology this year\, and we are going to do this workshop after learning about the carbon cycle. \nCost: Free \nWho: K-12 and parents\, but please read all the information provided to be sure this is a good fit for your student.  I was told by the education director that this workshop is best for upper elementary and middle school.  The younger elementary students (K-2nd) might have a hard time building the model and will need help from a parent or older student.  She also suggested that it may be too simple for the High Schoolers\, but as long as everyone is willing to to participate and help younger ones as needed without getting frustrated\, all K-12 students are welcome.  Please do not bring children younger than kindergarten.  If you need to bring babies or preschoolers\, you may take them for a walk around the campus while the older kids are in the workshop. \nWhen: The workshop starts at 10am.  I would like for you to be there at 9:50 to check in with me.  Please give yourself enough time to park\, walk\, and locate the room where our workshop is taking place. \nWhere: Materials Research Laboratory at UC Santa Barbara room 2048.  Click here for an interactive map http://mapdev.geog.ucsb.edu/#   \nThe lab is near the east gate at UCSB.  The closest parking is in Lot 10–there are coastal access parking spots on the first level of the structure that you can purchase hourly permits for (the permit dispenser is near the stairs). There are also visitor spots available in several other lots on campus.  Parking permit info: http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/parking-permits/short-term-parking-rates \nWhat is a Buckyball? \nSince 2004\, the Education Programs staff at the Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) has presented a “Build your own Buckyball” activity to school groups visiting the UCSB campus. The activity is based on a molecular model kit of the Carbon-60 molecule first developed by Sir Harry Kroto\, who shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of the Buckminsterfullerene (Buckyball)\, to provide K-12 students with a hands-on way to share in the discovery of the structure of this unique molecule. \nStudents\, ranging from elementary to early high school\, are given a brief PowerPoint introduction focused on Materials science and the scale of the nanometer\, different forms of carbon and the relationship between molecular structure and material properties.\nAs part of the workshop\, students build their own six-inch Buckyball models with instruction by UCSB graduate student volunteers. The workshop takes approximately one hour to complete.  https://www.mrl.ucsb.edu/education/build-buckyball-workshop \nSign Up by January 16th\, after that you can ask to be added to the wait list.

SUMMARY:Explore music with the Music Van
DESCRIPTION:We have a fantastic opportunity lined up for ACHEV to explore music with the Music Van and special guests\, the Oxnard Music Advocacy Group (OMAG)! \nThe OMAG musicians are volunteers with the mission to introduce Ventura County youth to the world of orchestra and band music. Currently they tour Oxnard elementary schools every year\, offering assemblies and opportunities to try out instruments using the Music Van from the New West Symphony. The Music Van contains donated instruments students are allowed to hold and try. I am volunteering with this group this year as their flute and piccolo musician. This is the first time they have been invited by a homeschool group. Many of them area unfamiliar with home education\, so let’s give them the best reception and attention they have ever had! \nThis field trip is for all ages\, including parents. Students must be well behaved\, able to listen to and follow instructions\, and be careful with the instruments as they are expensive to repair. You may bring your children of all ages at your discretion\, but young children especially must be well behaved and well supervised. Thank you. \nDetails: \nWHEN: January 9\, 2018 at 9:30am. Please arrive a few minutes early so we can be settled in to start promptly. \nCOST: $5 per family for the field trip\, but if you feel moved to donate a little extra toward instrument maintenance\, they would definitely appreciate it! There will be a jar at the door for donations. Thank you. \nSIGN UP: Please sign up by January 4th. Space permitting\, you may be able to sign up after that\, or even just show up\, but without at least 15 students\, we will not be able to have this field trip. It is a lot of work to unload and reload the Music Van and the musicians are giving their precious time to us\, so we really want to fill the place for them. \nWHERE: Poinsettia Pavilion (3451 Foothill Rd\, Vta) in the Canada Larga room\, which is accessible from the upper level west parking lot that overlooks the ocean. We do not need to go into the foyer of the Poinsettia Pavilion\, but can go in through the door directly from the parking lot straight into the room. \nIDEAS: Plan ahead by studying a little about orchestra and band at home\, think of questions\, think about what instruments you might like to play someday\, consider bringing a little thank you note for OMAG. They love to hear from the students. Also\, currently OMAG does not have anyone to demonstrate violin or viola. Do you play? Would you like to help? SUMMARY:Great Pacific Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:***This event was originally scheduled for Thursday October 4th\, and has been rescheduled due to rain for Wednesday October 10th. \nOh\, fall.  So many of us look forward to this season\, and pumpkins and all things pumpkin-spiced is one of the reasons why.   Join us for one of my favorite field trips of the year – every year.  We are going to the McGrath Brothers Great Pacific Pumpkin Patch – this is the same place we went to last year.  It is in Ventura on Olivas Park Drive\, it is not the one in Camarillo. \nWe will receive an educational pumpkin talk\, a hay ride on their beautiful property while we learn a bit of the history of their farm\, and then everyone can pick out their own pumpkins.  Children will get to pick out one small sugar pumpkin to take home (included in field trip fee)\, and the parents will get to pick out one medium sized pumpkin for free.  I was also told that they would open the hay maze for our kids at no additional charge. \nCost: $5 per child ages 3 and up.  (Children under 3 that do not pay the fee\, will not be able to pick out a pumpkin unless you pay for that separately).  Parent chaperones are free.  Please bring cash with you for the field trip fees. \nTime: Our tour starts at 10:45.  Please arrive at 10:30 so that I can collect cash from everyone and make payment before the tour starts. \nSign Up Here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13aMB3I9ov3Qpn1iZ06Ow4vQLug11TLyj_87Y0UJaN-U/edit#gid=0 \nAdditional Info: They have a wide and wonderful selection of pumpkins\, squash\, gourds\, and colorful corn available for purchase.   We have been to a lot of pumpkin patches\, and this is my favorite.  Below are a few pictures of some gourds that I purchased from the farm (already dried out) and we painted for Halloween. They should have a bunch of dried out gourds to choose from and they make a really fun art project for Halloween or Thanksgiving. \n \n  \n  \n
