SUMMARY:Aquarium of the Pacific Field Trip #2
DESCRIPTION:What: We have a fun opportunity to visit the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific on Wednesday April 16 at 10am.  This is a field trip you don’t want to miss! Our visit will be self-guided and you can stay as long as you’d like until they close at 6pm. If you haven’t been\,  you need to go!  Your older children will love it too.  ACHEV Grads are welcome. There is much to explore\, you can be occupied for hours.  Here is just some of what they have: \n\nThe Shark Lagoon features several species and sizes of sharks\, some of which you can touch … and some you can’t! This expansive outdoor exhibit is home to large sharks and rays\, shark touch pools.\nThe Tropical Reef Habitat\, which can be viewed from three locations in the gallery\, is the Aquarium’s largest exhibit. Holding 350\,000 gallons of water\, this exhibit features over a thousand colorful fish and beautiful coral\, including sea turtles\, zebra sharks and porcupine puffers.\nThe Southern California Gallery will feature over ten exhibits and more than three dozen species. Highlighted animals will include the California two-spot octopus\, leopard and horn sharks\, California scorpionfish\, a moray eel\, California spiny lobsters\, Catalina goby\, and California’s state marine fish—the Garibaldi. Visitors will be able to get up close to these animals as they explore a variety of new exhibits.\nSea Otter Habitat. Peer underwater and discover the busy world of sea otters as they swim and interact amongst kelp and fish.\n\nLunch: I have reserved a space for us to have our lunch at 12:15.  Bring your lunches in with you and there will be a place to store them until our lunch break.  The storage space is not refrigerated\, so bring insulated bags\, or something that does not need refrigeration.  I think it will be really nice to explore for a while and then all meet back up for lunch. \nWho: ACHEV Members\, all ages\, ACHEV Grads \nWhen: Wednesday April 16th\, our walk in time is 10am.  I you all to meet out front by 9:45.  We have to collect money from everyone and pay in one lump sum.  Bring cash. \nCost: $9 per person ages 3+ including adults.  We need a minimum of 10 students/participants and will be permitted 1 free adult chaperone per every 10 students. The cost of admission for all students\, siblings 3 and over\, and adults is $9.00. This is an incredible price as the admission tickets are usually $29.95 for kids 3-11\, and $44.95 for everyone 12+.  Parking Fees: The most convenient parking is within the Aquarium Parking Structure\, located on the waterside of Shoreline Drive between Chestnut Place and Aquarium Way. The parking fee is $8.00 for the day with Aquarium validation\, so don’t forget to bring your parking ticket in to get validated. \nSign Up: Please sign up HERE by Wednesday March 12th\, but sooner will help tremendously if you are able.  I need to make sure we have enough people for the field so that I don’t get stuck with a bill.  Conversely\, if we have a lot more people wanting to join than the 30 I reserved spaces for\, I need to know that much sooner rather than later or they may not have extra space.  If I have lots of advance notice\, the probability of being able to reserve additional space is much better. \nAdditional Info/Resources for our field trip to check out ahead of time \n

SUMMARY:Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve State Park Guided Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:What: Guided hike at the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve led by California State Park Staff/Volunteers.   Become a Junior Ranger of this beautiful state park!  We’ll get to see a very different environment than what we are used to in Coastal Southern California.  We’ll talk about a desert and what it is\, why it looks different\, and types of plant and animal adaptations. We’ll talk about what is beautiful and we’ll look for fragrant desert flowers . \nWho: ACHEV Members\, all ages at parental discretion.  This field trip is best suited for 2nd grade and up.  This field trip and hike can be tailored to our group.  Depending on who would like to come\, if you have a lot of younger kids\, or if we have anyone with accessibility needs\, we can use the ADA trail. \nCost: Free.  There is usually a fee to park\, but their website states: “Vehicle entrance for K-12 school groups is free. Fee waiver only applies to schools and homeschool groups; other school-age groups and organizations do not qualify. School fee waivers are only offered on the weekdays during school hours.” \nWhen: Monday April 7.  The tour begins at 11:30\, but you will need to plan to be there 20-30 minutes earlier than that in case it takes a while to get into the parking lot and to allow time to use the restroom and maybe eat a snack before we start our hike (see details below). \nNotes: \n\nTheir guidelines state no backpacks\, but this is directed more toward brick and mortar school students who usually have heavy books in their bags.   Kids who are capable of carrying their own backpacks may do so in order to carry their water and necessities.  They don’t want kids getting tired and distracted from lugging something around that they can’t handle very well.  Parents may carry a backpack with water and necessities.  Food is not permitted on the trail!\nWifi & cell reception is limited\nWe’ll meet in the parking lot at the visitor center\nLet’s carpool if possible.  Let me know if you would like to carpool.  I can carry a few extra people in my car.\nWhen you sign up for the field trip\, I will email you the Junior Ranger booklet so your kids can start some of the pages and the rest can be done on the field trip.  I also have a poppy coloring page to send you.\n\nSign Up here\nThere are a lot of details and rules to review before our trip.  Thank you so much for reading through the whole thing: \nCongrats! You have scheduled a Guided Field Trip to Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. Please read the email in its entirety so that you will have a successful field trip. \nGuided tours are led by California State Park Interpretive Staff and Volunteers. Allow a minimum of 1.5 hours for your visit. More time is preferable. During your field trip\, you are welcome and encouraged to explore the park whilst following established park rules. \nHow to Prepare \n\nCheck the weather. Students will need to be prepared to be exposed to whatever the weather conditions are. Please click this link for a weather report.\nOrganize Students. Before arriving at the park\, please organize students into groups of 10-15 with a minimum chaperone ratio of 1:15 (adult: student).\nPrepare Students. Ensure students are prepared to hike a 2-mile trail with half a moderate uphill. If there are students with mobility needs\, a shorter ADA compliant 1-mile trail will be utilized.\n\nComfortable Shoes. Students need comfortable\, closed-toe shoes. Remind students they will be hiking – they should wear shoes they are okay with getting dirty.\nWater bottles. Preferably one liter per student.\nLeave backpacks and lunches in the school bus.\nLayered Clothes. Antelope Valley CA Poppy Reserve can have extreme temperature changes and cold winds – the morning might be 40 degrees and the afternoon 90 degrees! Instruct students to wear comfortable clothes with layers to adjust for cold or heat.\nThere are no trashcans or restrooms on the hike. Garbage may be disposed of after the hike or if large amounts\, taken back to the school bus.\n\n\nPrepare Chaperones. Chaperones are expected to be active participants during the field trip and are responsible for their group. Chaperones should help with behavior management and to keep track of their group.\n\nParking and Directions \nFor directions to the park\, you can open the Google Map directions here. There is no fee associated with parking for registered school groups. During peak times\, it can take 30-40 minutes to enter the park. Please arrive at least 15-20 minutes in advance of your scheduled tour time. \nBuses can park in the Overflow lot. Make a right into the dirt lot after the kiosk. Single cars or otherwise not identifiable school buses may park in the main parking lot or in the overflow lot. Parking spaces are not reserved and are on a first come-first served basis \nWhen you arrive at the parking lot\, our State Park Interpreter/Volunteer will greet your bus. At this point\, students will exit the bus\, use the restrooms in the main parking lot\, and get into their smaller groups with their chaperone to participate in the nature hike. Lunches and backpacks are to remain stored on the bus. \nWhat to expect during the field trip \n\nTrained\, interpretive staff/volunteer docents will lead groups of 15-30 students on a nature hike\, stopping every 5 minutes or so to discuss a topic or do an activity.\nAfter the tour\, your class is welcome to stay and explore the park and visitor center. If you would like to enjoy lunch in the Reserve\, lunch can be eaten at picnic tables at our first come\, first serve picnic area.\nAbout 15 minutes before your expected departure time\, teachers and chaperones will walk students back to the bus as a group.\n\nTrail map- Click here for a trail map. \nFree self-guided brochures are also available along with a scavenger hunt focusing on the park’s natural resources is available to download/print before your visit. \nThe Merlin app by Cornell is an excellent resource for bird identification. \niNaturalist or iSeek will help you identify any animal or plant within the Reserve. \nBehavior Expectations to Discuss with Your Students: \nWhen you are visiting the park\, please be sure to clearly outline behavioral expectations for your students that will protect park resources and wildlife and provide for the safety of your group. \nLeave No Trace & Keep It Crumb Clean: Please instruct students to pack out any trash that they bring into the park with them\, this includes all wrappers and food scraps. Although natural food items will naturally break down over time\, leaving behind scraps attracts pests and negatively impacts wildlife and other visitors. \nStay on the official trails! \nStepping on plants kills them\, causing ugly patches of bare dirt that ruin the park’s beauty. Walking on already-damaged areas will crush roots and worsen the damage. We have Mojave green rattlesnakes at the park. Mojave green rattlesnakes prefer to hide in the flowers and grass. Stay on the trail. \nDo not pick any flowers. \nALL plants\, animals\, rocks\, and historic objects are protected by law in the park. Wild areas are becoming increasingly rare. This park was created to protect ALL natural and historic features. \nDogs/Pets are prohibited. \nNo Drone Zone \nDrones are prohibited in the airspace above the park due to fire danger\, negative impacts on wildlife\, and visitors’ reasonable expectations of privacy and tranquility. \nConsumption of food is only allowed in parking lots and the designated picnic areas. \nPost-Visit trip Activity Suggestions: \n\nHave students investigate the animals and environments around the school neighborhood. If you are in a more urban area\, investigate the relationship between the city ecosystem and the kinds of animals that have adapted to live close by with us (see this link for more information). Use this resource from Wonder of Science as a graphic organizer to support this field trip.\n\nPost-Visit Survey: \n\nLet us know how we did! Complete this survey\n\nIf you have any other pre field trip inquiries\, questions\, or concerns\, contact Callista.Turner@parks.ca.gov . On the day of your visit please feel free to call (661) 483-0565 if you have any problem locating the park or you are running late. \nThank you\, we look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Aquarium of the Pacific
DESCRIPTION:What: We have a fun opportunity to visit the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific on Thursday January 30th at 11am. Peer underwater and discover the busy world of sea otters as they swim and interact amongst kelp and fish.\n\nLunch: I have reserved a space for us to have our lunch at 12:45.  Bring your lunches in with you and there will be a place to store them until our lunch break.  The storage space is not refrigerated\, so bring insulated bags\, or something that does not need refrigeration.  I think it will be really nice to explore for a while and then all meet back up for lunch. \nWho: ACHEV Members\, all ages\, Grads \nWhen: Thursday January 30th\, our walk in time is 11am.  I want all of you to meet me out front by 10:45.  I have to collect money from everyone and pay in one lump sum.  I will take a personal Zelle payment if you prefer that to cash or forget cash.  Contact me for those details. \nSign Up: Please sign up HERE by Thursday December 19th\, but sooner will help tremendously if you are able.

SUMMARY:Oxnard Police Department Tour
DESCRIPTION:    \nWhat: Come visit the Oxnard Police Department.  We will get a tour of the station\, dispatch and booking\, a police car\, and see their new drone unit.  We will also get to visit the building on Sturgis Rd. where the SWAT team trains and keeps all their equipment. \nCost: Free \nWho: ACHEV Members all ages and their parents.  Space is limited\, so please only one parent per family. \nNotes: We may be divided into two groups.  I will let you know when we get close to the field trip date.  We will be visiting two separate facilities.  When we finish at one\, we will drive about 10 minutes to the other.  This gives us the opportunity to see all the neat stuff the SWAT team does as well as seeing the station\, the jail\, etc.  I will give more details to all participants before the trip. \nWe haven’t done a police station tour since 2018\, and we have never gotten to see the Sturgis facility before.  We’ll also get to see some of their special equipment (robot\, Bearcat)\, and new stuff\, so we are excited for this opportunity. \n*If you have a baby\, it would be best to use a carrier for this field trip – it will be hard to maneuver a stroller around – there are tight spaces and stairs and it is a very old building. \nSign up Here by Sunday December 8th

SUMMARY:JPL Pasadena Field Trip - NASA Jet Propulsion Lab
DESCRIPTION:JPL Field Trip – NASA Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena\n\nWhat: Guided tour of Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, website: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/\n\n\n\n“The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is a unique national research facility that carries out robotic space and Earth science missions. JPL helped open the Space Age by developing America’s first Earth-orbiting science satellite\, creating the first successful interplanetary spacecraft\, and sending robotic missions to study all the planets in the solar system as well as asteroids\, comets and Earth’s moon. In addition to its missions\, JPL developed and manages NASA’s Deep Space Network\, a worldwide system of antennas that communicates with interplanetary spacecraft.” \n“All tours commonly include a multimedia presentation on JPL entitled “Journey to the Planets and Beyond\,” which provides an overview of the Laboratory’s activities and accomplishments. Guests may also visit the von Karman Visitor Center\, the Space Flight Operations Facility\, and the Spacecraft Assembly Facility.” \nSign up deadline: Thursday November 7\, 2024 \nTime: Please arrive at  9:10 AM to check in and use restrooms. We will enter promptly at 9:30 PM. Tour will end by 12:00 PM.  Keep in mind\, the drive is far and you never know what traffic will do\, so give yourself extra time and bring your breakfast\, and maybe some books with you in the car. \nWho: Grades 3-12 & parent chaperones.  Younger siblings NOT Permitted\, no babies.  I was only able to get an exception for 2 second graders to come along.  My son is one of them: that means we will be allowed only one more second grader if there is one that can handle the field trip as described without becoming impatient or disruptive.  Please read the details below\, and do not bring any children regardless of age that will likely have difficulties with the field trip.  If there is a need for an accommodation for disability\, please contact me so that I can communicate with JPL about accommodations. \nI was only able to get a reservation for 30 people.  Sign up on the waitlist if it is full in case someone cancels before Nov 7\, or in case I get real lucky and can somehow add more people.  These field trips are super high in demand and getting a reservation is really hard! \nPlease consider these things when deciding if this is a good field trip for you:  \n1) The subject matter may be boring to younger children if they do not have an interest in the topic.  Your children need to be able to sit/stand still and be quiet for extended periods. \n2) The tour will last 2 to 2.5 hours \n3) If anyone needs to use the restroom during the tour\, the whole tour must stop and wait. \n4) We cannot go anywhere in the facility unaccompanied by the tour guide\, so if a child becomes disruptive\, you will not be able to remove them or stay behind. \n5) There is considerable walking\, standing\, and stair climbing in this tour. \n6) Everybody in attendance MUST be on the roster \n7) The video that they show contains evolutionary ideas presented as facts; things such as\, “we all came from stardust”.  This is something you might want to talk about ahead of time. \n8) There is nowhere on site where we will be allowed to eat lunch or purchase food.  Pack a lunch and leave it in your car\, or plan to buy food after the trip somewhere along the road. \n9) You know your child best and if this tour will be something they will enjoy.  We have done this field trip several times in past years and if your children are too young\, or not mature enough yet\, you will probably get a chance to do this in the future. \nCost: FREE \nLocation: 4800 Oak Grove Drive\, Pasadena\, CA 91109\, Directions: http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/about_JPL/maps.php \nStreet address for use in online map searches:\n4800 Oak Grove Drive\nLa Cañada Flintridge\, CA 91011 \nContact Person: bonnieadair@verizon.net\, 805-504-6457 \n**Important Notes**: You must commit to this event. The final roster will be submitted 3 weeks before the tour and changes cannot be made once finalized. Please read the information below thoroughly before signing up. \nAs the tour organizer I have been told that you MUST read the following information:\n\nAll US citizens 18 years of age or older visiting JPL MUST present official\, government-issued photo identification\, such as a driver’s license or passport\, before being allowed entry.\nAnyone not on our approved roster will not be admitted on to the facility. *Note: Substituting roster names the day of the tour is not allowed*\nAll non-US citizens (Foreign Nationals) 18 years of age or older MUST present either a passport or resident visa (green card) before being allowed entry. Individuals without the appropriate identification will NOT be admitted to the facility.\nFederal security requirements insist that you provide this office with a roster (maximum 20 persons) 3 weeks before the tour. We require the full name and country of citizenship for all adults\, and full name for those under the age of 18.\nAll non-US citizens (Foreign Nationals) 18 years of age or older MUST present either a passport or resident visa (green card) before being allowed entry. Individuals without the appropriate identification will NOT be admitted to the facility.\nThe tour includes considerable walking and stair climbing. Dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. Wheelchairs can be accommodated with prior notice. Cameras are allowed on the tour. While a small personal item can be brought on tour\, please refrain from bringing any large items\, such as duffle bags and suitcases. *Note: All tours are conducted in English*\nOur address is: 4800 Oak Grove Dr.\, La Canada Flintridge\, CA 91011.  Further driving instructions can be found on our website.\nTo control the traffic flow in our visitor reception center\, upon arrival\, please send only one representative into the visitor reception building to notify us of your arrival. Please try to limit and/or control your guests’ access to the JPL Store and restrooms.\n\nSign Up Here by November 7th.  Make sure to include full legal name with middle initial\, plus country of citizenship.

SUMMARY:Poverty Encounter Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:What: Come join us for an amazing experience at The Poverty Encounter! Poverty Encounter is an interactive exhibit that takes you into four immersive environments in the developing world. Each environment highlights the story of a real child living in these circumstances. Onsite tours include a service activity\, allowing you to respond biblically by providing both help and hope to those in need. (Feel free to explore their website! https://childrenshungerfund.org/…/poverty-encounter-about/ \n“An immersive\, interactive experience\, Poverty Encounter provides a unique understanding of the impact of living in poverty\, and opportunities to make a difference.” \n\nEncountering Poverty\n\n\n\n\nby Lynn Phillips\, Poverty Encounter at Children’s Hunger Fund \nHave you ever heard your children say\, “I’m starving\,” “there’s nothing to eat\,” or “I don’t like this meal!”? Do you wish your children had a greater appreciation for what they have? As a homeschool mother of four\, it pained me to hear my boys’ lack of gratitude for all the Lord had given them. One of the reasons we homeschooled was to teach our kids about who God is and that they can play a part in His plans. My husband and I wondered how we could open our children’s eyes to the abundance they had before them. \nRead the rest of this article at http://www.homeschool411.com/family/encountering-poverty/ \n\nWhere: 13931 Balboa Blvd | Sylmar\, CA 91342 \n\nWhen: Friday\, June 14th\, 2024 at 10:00 am:  Please arrive 20 minutes before your reservation time and check in at the Poverty Encounter entrance of the building.  Each tour is 90 minutes with a 30-minute service activity during which guests will be able to pack food for families in need.  There is a considerable amount of walking and standing throughout the experience so please dress comfortably. \nCost: $5 per person ages 6 and up.  This is a special price to celebrate 5 years of Poverty Encounter =)    5 and under\, free.  Paid in advance.  Sales for this event will close two weeks before the event.  This is what they ask so that they can work out scheduling in preparation for our event.   They have created a special link just for our group\, to purchase tickets online. \nDEADLINE: 5/31/24!\nPlease see attached spreadsheet and link.\nFollow the link to sign up for tickets and also sign up on the spreadsheet.\nYou will need to either print out a sheet and fill it out before you come\, or you can fill one out at the center. With every wheelchair and Bible delivered\, every retreat and respite event held\, and every church mobilized to integrate and honor people with disabilities\, Joni and Friends follows the call of Jesus found in Luke 14:“Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor\, the crippled\, the blind\, and the lame.… Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in\, so that my house will be full” (Luke 14:21\, 23\, NIV). \nIf you aren’t familiar with this wonderful ministry\, check out their website: https://joniandfriends.org/about/ \nOptional lunch/park play date at local Reyes Adobe Park after the tour.  31400 Rainbow Crest Dr\, Agoura Hills\, CA 91301.  Let me know if you plan to join us for that. \nCost: Free.  No suggested donation\, but as a non-profit organization\, they do value donations. \nService Opportunity: You can make gospel bracelets before the field trip and bring them with you to donate to their ministry.  Here are instructions! \nGospel_Bracelet_Instructions_2022 \nWho: ACHEV members.  All ages and parents are welcome\, but be aware that tour is geared to ages 7 and up.  Younger children may become bored and will need to be closely supervised by parents and taken aside if they become a distraction.   Joni & Friends prefers that younger children are left at home if possible\, but they do not expect that parents will be able to hire babysitters and do not want to hinder families from attending due to childcare issues.  Babes in arms are welcome\, and the facility is stroller & wheelchair friendly. \nSign Up: We can have a maximum of 40 kids and parents attending. They need a head count ASAP.  I gave them an estimated number of 20-30.  Our final roster is due two weeks in advance\, but if we expect fewer than 20 or more than 30\, they would really like to have more than two weeks notice.  The deadline is January 3rd\, but signing up much earlier is very helpful.   \nSign up on the sign up sheet HERE  Please make sure to list all attendees on the sign up sheet including all parents and babies. \nWhere to Meet/Directions: Exit 101 fwy at Reyes adobe.  There are 2 buildings.  Come up driveway and continue past the first building keep turning left (3 left turns to get up the driveway).  There is signage that should help us find the correct location. Park in the parking lot or along the side of the building.  We will meet inside the building.  You can go in the front door and see the receptionist.  I’ll try to be the first one there. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Great Pacific Pumpkin Patch Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Oh\, fall.  So many of us look forward to this season\, and pumpkins and all things pumpkin-spiced is one of the reasons why.   Join us for one of my favorite field trips of the year.  We are going to the McGrath Brothers Great Pacific Pumpkin Patch.  It has been a while since our group has visited this pumpkin patch.  It is in Ventura on Olivas Park Drive\, it is not the one in Camarillo. \nWe will receive an educational pumpkin/squash talk\, a hay ride on their beautiful property while we learn a bit of the history of their farm\, a visit with the animals (including ducks and pigs) and then everyone can pick out their own pumpkins.  Children will get to pick out one small sugar pumpkin to take home (included in $7 field trip fee). \nCost: $7 per child ages 6 and up.  $1 for every adult and kids under 6 (including babies).  Children under 6 that do not pay $7\, do not get a sugar pumpkin included\, but you can choose and pay for as many additional pumpkins and squash as you like.  Bring cash with you for the field trip fees. I will collect from everyone as you arrive and make one lump payment for our group before the field trip starts.  They take credit cards at the farm stand if you want to purchase additional pumpkins from them. \nTime: Our tour starts at 10:00.  Please arrive at 9:45 so that I can collect cash from everyone and make payment before the tour starts.  The tour will last about 45-60 minutes\, but plan to spend a little extra time afterwards to look at their wonderful selection of pumpkins and squash that are great for eating\, decorating and carving. \nSign Up Here\nAdditional Info: \n\nThey have a wide and wonderful selection of pumpkins\, squash\, gourds\, and colorful corn available for purchase.   We have been to a lot of pumpkin patches\, and this is my favorite to purchase from.  They should have a bunch of dried out gourds to choose from and they make a really fun art project for Halloween or Thanksgiving.\nThey are dog friendly as long as your dog stays on a leash and you clean up after it.\nBring your whole family and your camera!  They have a lot of good photo ops here =)\nWear good shoes.  There is a lot of dirt and some uneven ground.  Potentially mud depending on weather.\n\n \n
