It will be held at the beautiful Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura\, which has a generous stage and dance floor\, and beautiful view from the patio area. \nParent chaperones are required for this dance. If you are unable to attend\, you may find another parent ahead of time to chaperone in your place. Thank you.  If the children under your care are outside on the patio\, make sure to supervise them out there.  Children are not allowed outside of the building without a chaperone present. \nThere are many important details so you will be prepared to have the very best time! Please read carefully\, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. The organizers are happy to answer your questions. \nNo Younger Siblings.  This event is for 6th grade and up only.  Younger siblings are not permitted at this event.  Babes in arms/nursing babies are okay. \nACHEV has guidelines for events. They are included in full on the “keep this” page of your membership agreement. Here are the points that are relevant to dances: \n\nBe punctual as a courtesy to other members and our hosts.\nParents are responsible for their children’s behavior and safety for the duration of the gathering. This responsibility may be delegated to another parent if necessary. No drop offs.\nAttire should be modest and appropriate for the occasion.\nBe respectful of both private and public property.\nPlease clean up after yourself at all events.\nThank the individuals who made the event possible.\nACHEV activities are for members only\, unless otherwise stated.\n\nThank you for bringing a finger food to share. ACHEV does not have an inventory of serving plates. Thank you. \nYou may invite friends you believe would enjoy this dance. Guests must be cleared in advance with Tina Beeson: buckeyeflats@hotmail.com or 805-551-5479. Please share all the information with your guests so they are prepared. Thank you.  While we do keep a guest list and ask that you get your guests cleared in advance\, we do not have a limit on guests for dances at the Poinsettia Pavilion. \nConsider arriving a little bit before 7pm so that you have time to get through the check in line and are ready to start at 7.  We don’t want you to miss anything. =) \nCost: $15 per dancer. Parent Chaperones are free.  $30 family maximum.  Pay at the door with either cash or check payable to ACHEV. \nACHEV has a dress code for dances. This is the dress code for the Sock Hop Dance. It is enforced upon entrance. Come prepared\, and be sure to share this with your invited guests. A good rule of thumb is if you are unsure\, change into something that clearly meets dress code. Thank you for helping us uphold the dress code. \nBoys: \n\nT-shirts OK for this dance\nJeans OK for this dance\, no holes\nWear closed toe shoes.  No flip flops.  It is easier to dance in shoes that do not have rubber bottoms.\n\nGirls: \nWhile 1950’s era dresses and skirts (which were predominately below the knee) are most suitable for this event\, we have included illustrations of the minimum hemline allowed by the dress code for dances in general. Please note if dresses have sheer layers\, it is the solid fabric that must be at least to the top of the knee\, as shown below. Please note the requirement for wearing modest leggings or shorts under skirts\, since twirling and other athletic moves are involved in many swing dance steps. \n\n Skirts or dresses knee length or longer. (This means touching the top of the kneecap\, regardless of leggings.) If there is a lace overlay\, the skirt underneath (solid fabric) needs to touch the kneecap.\nSlits in skirts cannot rise above the top of the kneecap regardless of leggings underneath.  If your skirt/dress just touches the top of the knee and it has a slit in it\, it is too short.  You can stitch up a slit or use safety pins to close it up.\nLeggings or shorts are required if the skirt rises past the knees while twirling.  It’s a good idea to wear shorts or leggings under your skirts regardless of length.\nNo low-cut\, strapless\, backless\, or halter tops. Straps need to be at least one inch wide. No exposed midriffs\, cleavage or bra straps.  No peekaboo cutouts.  If your top is sheer or see through (such as lace)\, you need to wear underneath solid straps that are at least one inch wide.   If you aren’t sure\, wear a cardigan over your dress.\nGirls can wear a t-shirt under their dress or along with a skirt.\nNo pants (other than leggings under your skirt or dress).\nClosed toe shoes are recommended.  We recommend no slingback shoes.  No flip flops.  It is easier to dance in shoes that do not have rubber bottoms.   If the girls want to wear heels\, please bring a second pair of shoes that will be more comfortable in case they need/want to remove their heels.\n\nHere is the visual dress code with some photos to help show minimum hemline/skirt length:  Sock Hop Visual Dress Code\nThank you for sharing dance etiquette with your children and invited guests. \nFor Boys: \n\nAsk a variety of girls to dance.  They are waiting for you to ask.  Smile\, offer your hand\, and ask if she would like to dance.\nYou may be nervous asking a girl to dance. That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance.\nIf we announce a Sadie Hawkins dance\, and you decline an offer to dance\, you will rest for the entire song.\n\nFor Girls: \n\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer unless you need to rest or take a breather\, in which case you may say “no thank you”.  If you decline an offer to dance\, you will rest for the duration of that song.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard and nerve-wracking for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by opening up your circle.\n\nFor Both: \n\nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations and help them learn a few of the steps.\nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime.\nA Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance.  The boys are to do the asking unless we announce a Sadie Hawkins dance.\nChewing Gum is not permitted at the Poinsettia Pavilion\nThank the band\, or a band member\, for playing for us if you get an opportunity.\n\nVolunteers are needed to make the evening run smoothly. We need you. There are many ways to help.  Volunteer Sign Up Sheet is Here.\nThere is no sign up sheet to attend the dance\, only a sign up sheet for helpers.  We don’t have concerns about exceeding the maximum capacity for the building at this location.\n

No exposed cleavage or bra straps.  If you aren’t sure\, wear a cardigan over your dress.\nIf your top is sheer or see through\, you need to wear underneath solid straps that are at least one inch wide.\nGirls can wear a t-shirt under their dress or along with a skirt.\nNo pants (other than leggings under your skirt or dress).\nClosed toe shoes are recommended.  We recommend no slingback shoes.  Absolutely no flip flops\, socks\, or bare feet.  It is hard to dance when your shoes are super sticky/grippy on the dance floor.   If you don’t have dress/dance shoes\, Converse/Keds type shoes work OK.  If the girls want to wear heels\, please bring a second pair of shoes that will be more comfortable in case they need/want to remove their heels.\n\nPlease view the visual dress code: ACHEV Dress Code for Dances In General \nThank you for sharing dance etiquette with your children and invited guests. \nFor Boys: \n\nAsk a variety of girls to dance.  They are waiting for you to ask\,  Smile\, offer your hand\, and ask if she would like to dance.\nYou may be nervous asking a girl to dance. The boys are to do the asking unless we announce a Sadie Hawkins dance.\n\nVolunteers are needed to make the evening run smoothly. We need you. There are many ways to help.  Volunteer Sign Up Sheet is Here.\n  \n\n\n\nIf you have never been to an ACHEV dance\, and have never taken dance lessons with us\, here are some video links that you can check out to help you learn the basic steps to most of the music we will be playing. You do not have to learn these steps\, but if you feel like this would be helpful to you\, give it a try. We will also be doing a few group & line dances that will hopefully get everyone dancing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEast Coast Swing: The first two videos show the basic step and the basic turn/side pass. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNYLxnVOJak&list=PLLALQuK1NDrjk85UjKkAOCA-VDy_zI5vt&index=8\, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm3wJSDlzW4&list=PLLALQuK1NDrjk85UjKkAOCA-VDy_zI5vt&index=23\, This is an especially good video that shows some “don’ts” as well as some important tips for leaders (boys). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF54hIuRmpk\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSingle Time Swing: This type of swing is danced to the faster music. Here’s a 10 min video that shows the basic step \, timing\, and a couple different turns. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8Md_wwCKIY&list=PLFd7u4YGuG-iTXx7jjk423nW21JXH8ndQ\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCha Cha: Here is the basic step and timing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pMjX6VKRwk Here is the cross body lead that some of the kids learned in our dance classes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EubkwC6xj10 and here is a basic turn for the ladies but the boys need to watch this also so they know how to lead the ladies into it and what they need to do while she makes her turn =) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55xMEAwvXI4\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWaltz: Basic box step https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBKTN6c_MEQ and the underarm turn (very different than a swing turn so please watch only 2.5 minutes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjFR9E5CHaM\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNightclub 2 Step: This is a slower dance that is easy to learn. This is a great video that shows the basic step and how to dance with a partner. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jMc1JGXQP8\n\n\n\n

Here are the points that are relevant to dances: \n\nBe punctual as a courtesy to other members and our hosts.\nParents are responsible for their children’s behavior and safety for the duration of the gathering. This responsibility may be delegated to another parent if necessary. No drop offs.\nAttire should be modest and appropriate for the occasion.\nBe respectful of both private and public property.\nPlease clean up after yourself at all events.\nThank the individuals who made the event possible.\nACHEV activities are for members only\, unless otherwise stated.\n\nParent chaperones are required for this dance. If you are unable to attend\, you may find another parent ahead of time to chaperone in your place. Thank you. \nNo Younger Siblings.  This event is for 6th grade and up only.  Younger siblings are not permitted at this event.  Babes in arms/nursing babies are okay. \nThank you for bringing a finger food to share. It will help us tremendously if you bring them on a serving plate or bowl (disposable if you prefer) to make it presentable and easy for those volunteering to manage the refreshment tables. ACHEV does not have an inventory of serving plates. Thank you. \nYou may invite friends you believe would enjoy this dance. Guests must be cleared in advance with the organizers. Please share all the information with your guests so they are prepared. Thank you. \nACHEV has a dress code for dances. This is the dress code for the Back to School Dance. It is enforced upon entrance. Please do your best to come prepared\, and be sure to share this with your invited guests. A good rule of thumb is if you are unsure\, change into something that clearly meets dress code. Thank you for helping us uphold the dress code. \n \nThank you for sharing dance etiquette with your children and invited guests. \nFor Boys: \n\nAsk a variety of girls to dance.  They are waiting for you to ask\,  Smile\, offer your hand\, and ask if she would like to dance.\nYou may be nervous asking a girl to dance. That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance.\n\nFor Girls: \n\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard and nerve-wracking for a boy to ask you to dance. The boys are to do the asking unless we announce a Sadie Hawkins dance.\n\nVolunteers are needed to make the evening run smoothly. We need you. There are many ways to help. \nhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1pBf954xeGrOzkcYKClHs6X173mzR183q8g5AZV_4lkI/edit?usp=sharing \n\n\n\nIf you have never been to an ACHEV dance\, and have never taken dance lessons with us\, here are some video links that you can check out to help you learn the basic steps to most of the music we will be playing.

Do not sign up for this dance if you cannot be on time.\nPlease carefully read the dress code and etiquette guidelines below.\n\nDress Code: \nWe do not want to have to send anyone home\, so please\, follow the guidelines.  If you are having trouble\, reach out and ask questions or ask to borrow something. \nMasks are not required. \nBoys: \n\nCollared shirts (button-up or polo)\, long sleeve or short sleeved.\nSlacks\, NO jeans\nClosed toe shoes: Absolutely no flip flops\, socks or bare feet.  Sneakers/running/basketball shoes are not recommended\, but you can wear them if you must.  It is hard to dance when your shoes are super sticky/grippy on the dance floor.  If you don’t have dress/dance shoes\, Converse/Keds type shoes work well.\n\nGirls: \n\n Skirts or dresses knee length or longer. (This means touching the top of the knee\, regardless of leggings.) If there is a lace overlay\, the skirt underneath (solid fabric) needs to touch the knee.\nLeggings or shorts are required if the skirt rises past the knees while twirling.  It’s a good policy to wear dance pants under your skirts regardless of length.\nNo low-cut\, strapless\, backless\, or halter tops. Straps need to be at least one inch wide. No exposed cleavage or bra straps.  If you aren’t sure\, wear a cardigan over your dress.\nNo pants (other than leggings under your skirt or dress).\nClosed toe shoes: Absolutely no flip flops\, socks\, or bare feet.  Cross trainers/running/basketball shoes are not recommended\, but you can wear them if you must.  It is hard to dance when your shoes are super sticky/grippy on the dance floor.  No sling back shoes.   If you don’t have dress/dance shoes\, Converse/Keds type shoes work well.  If the girls want to wear heels\, please bring a second pair of shoes that will be more comfortable in case they need/want to remove their heels because you can’t be dancing barefoot.\n\nBasic Dance Etiquette.  Please go over this with your dancers: \nFor Boys: \n\nAsk a variety of girls to dance.  They are waiting for you to ask.  Don’t drag your feet in getting around to asking someone\, and don’t spend the evening standing around.  It’s not fair to the girls.  The time goes by quickly!\nYou may be nervous asking a girl to dance. That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.\nOffer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor\nWhen the dance is over\, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance.\n\nFor Girls: \n\nIf a boy asks you to dance\, graciously accept his offer.\nIf you stand with your friends in a closed circle\, it is hard and nerve wracking for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by opening up your circle.\nPlease limit the amount of dancing you do with your girl-friends and only do it if there are no boys available to dance with.  The boys don’t dance with each other and when the girls are just goofing around with each other on the dance floor\, the boys end up standing around not knowing what to do.\n\nFor Both: \n\nEvery dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations.\nNot everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime.\nA Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance.  The boys are to do the asking unless we announce a Sadie Hawkins dance.\nIt is okay to sit out for a dance\, but remember\, we are here to dance.  This is a special occasion\, and there will be time for goofing around\, chatting and socializing another time.\n\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Of Winters Past... An English Country Dance Formal
DESCRIPTION:Of Winters Past… \nThis dance is a little different from the others hosted by ACHEV. For those of you who are new\, English Country Dance (ECD) is social\, or group dancing in sets or lines. The height of popularity was during the Regency Era\, but it is just as wonderful today as ever. To learn more about English Country Dancing in general\, visit the Santa Barbara Country Dance Society\, or sbcds.org. Below are some pictures from a movie based on Pride and Prejudice. \n    \nACHEV hosts this dance for the private homeschool community: ACHEV\, CASA\, SBCHI and TPCS students 6th grade and older\, including graduates\, and parents. Although helpful\, no prior experience necessary\, as dances will be taught and called. This dance requires some paying attention to learn and follow instructions in order for everyone to get the most enjoyment out of each dance. Mature and motivated students as young as ten may attend at the discretion of their parents.  \nGary Shapiro will be the Dance Master. Live music! \nSaturday\, January 26\, 7-10pm\nAt the Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura\, located at 3451 Foothill Road in Ventura\n$15 per person ($30 family maximum); parent chaperones are free\nPlease bring a finger-food to share. Water provided. \nParents are encouraged to participate in this dance. Many do every year. Parents\, who chaperone\, attend for free. If you wish to invite a guest\, you need to contact Anita Schneider\, at schneiderab@verizon.net or text/call 805-490-0154\, in advance. Please remember it is your responsibility to carefully read dance notices to be sure your students and guests are prepared. \nAll dancers under 18 need a parent chaperone. If you are unable to stay\, please make arrangements for another responsible parent to chaperone in your place. (Parents\, if you do stay\, please consider dressing up and joining the dancing!) Also\, mature and motivated dancers as young as eleven years old are welcome as well. Parents\, you are responsible for deciding if your younger children are ready to participate. \nFormal Attire ~ Of Winters Past… is a time period formal event. Era costume will be admired\, but not required! Regency Era was the height of ECD\, but honestly\, any era from medieval forward works\, as ECD has been loved for centuries. That means Renaissance\, Regency\, colonial\, Victorian\, even 1900’s are all fair game! Just have fun with it. \nModest historical costumes are encouraged\, otherwise formalwear\, please\, such as vests and ties for the boys\, and long formal dresses for the girls. The ACHEV dress code for dances applies. Please visit and carefully read the full dress code: ECD Formal visual dress code. It includes examples of Regency Era attire as well as illustrations to clarify the minimum requirements of the dress code for dances. \nStudents arriving at the dance without proper attire will be asked to call a parent to bring suitable clothing or return home to change. Please be gracious in accepting the decision of the person in charge. \nFor period dress ideas\, watch a movie based on a Jane Austen novel (Pride and Prejudice\, Persuasion\, Sense and Sensibility\, Emma) and start visiting thrift stores. Some of the gowns from the movies are quite simple – have fun with it! Fabric stores often have historical sewing patterns\, if you are inclined to sew. \nTo volunteer\, please sign up here. Thanks! Of Winters Past 2019 volunteers \nFor inquiries\, please contact Anita Schneider at schneiderab@verizon.net. \n
