**Canceled** Sock Hop
April 4, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Sadly, we had to cancel this event due to the coronavirus threat as recommended by Ventura County Public Health.
—————————————— CANCELED ——————————————
The ACHEV Sock Hop has been an annual favorite for many years! Come join us for a great evening of 1950’s era swing dance fun.
Who: Private homeschooled students in ACHEV, TPCS, and SBCHI, 6th grade and up and parents. You may invite guests, but guest need to be cleared in advance with Patty Silver at patricia.silver@me.com.
These dances are one of the few times we cannot include the whole family as there are no accommodations for children 5th grade and younger. Please make arrangements to leave younger children at home. Babes in arms OK.
Where: Poinsettia Pavilion, located at 3451 Foothill Road in Ventura
Chaperones: A parent chaperone is required for students under 18. As with all ACHEV functions, parents are responsible for their children’s behavior and safety for the duration of the event. If you cannot chaperone your own child, please make arrangements in advance with another parent. Thank you.
Cost: $10 per student, $30 family limit, parent chaperones free. Pay at the door with either cash or check payable to ACHEV.
Attire: While 1950’s era dresses and skirts (which were predominately below the knee) are most suitable for this event, we have included illustrations of the minimum hemline allowed by the dress code for dances in general. Please note if dresses have sheer layers, it is the solid fabric that must be at least to the top of the knee, as shown below. Please note the requirement for wearing modest leggings or shorts under skirts, since twirling and other athletic moves are involved in many swing dance steps.
Boys
– T-shirts OK for this dance
– Jeans OK for this dance, no holes
Girls
– Skirts or dresses must be knee length or longer. (This means touching the top of the knee, regardless of leggings.) If there is a lace overlay, the skirt underneath (solid fabric) needs to touch the knee.
– Leggings or shorts are required if the skirt rises past the knees while twirling.
– No low-cut, strapless, backless, or halter tops. Straps need to be at least 1 inch wide
– No exposed midriffs, cleavage or bra straps
Sock Hop Dance Visual Dress Code guidelines are enforced.
Bring: A finger food snack to share.
Guests? Yes! The more the merrier! You may invite guests. Guests need to be cleared in advance with Patty Silver at patricia.silver@me.com. It is your responsibility to inform your guests about the the dance, including rules, dance etiquette, and the dress code.
Basic Dance Etiquette
Thank you for sharing this with your children.
For boys:
Ask a variety of girls to dance. They are waiting for you to ask.
You may be nervous asking a girl to dance. That is ok. She is probably nervous waiting to be asked.
Offer her your hand or your arm and escort her onto the dance floor.
When the dance is over, escort her off the floor and thank her for the dance.
For girls:
If a boy asks you to dance, graciously accept his offer.
If you stand with your friends in a closed circle, it is hard for a boy to ask you to dance. Make yourself available by op ening up your circle.
For both:
Every dance has first time attendees. Make an effort to reach out to them and include them in your conversations.
Not everyone knows how to dance…that is ok. Everyone has to begin sometime.
A Sadie Hawkins dance is when a girl can ask a boy to dance.
