THE MANY PATHS TO SUCCESS

ACHEV HOMESCHOOL CAREER SYMPOSIUM

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

The Career Symposium is designed specifically for:

  • ACHEV high school students & their parents
  • ACHEV grads
  • (Mature 8th graders OK)

We encourage students and parents to attend together so families can explore career possibilities, ask questions, and discuss potential pathways for life after high school. (This is a special event for high school students, we ask that you please leave younger siblings at home)

Success doesn’t look the same for everyone. What comes after high school? For some students, the answer may be a four-year college degree. For others, it may be a trade school, certification program, apprenticeship, entrepreneurship, or entering the workforce directly.

The purpose of the ACHEV Career Symposium is to introduce our students to real professionals from a variety of career fields and educational backgrounds, helping them discover possibilities and understand that there are many pathways to a successful and fulfilling career. Our goal is not to tell students what they should become. Our goal is to help them discover what is possible.

We are seeking individuals within the ACHEV community who are willing to share their career journey with our students. We are specifically looking for professionals in three categories:

  • COLLEGE EDUCATION (Careers that typically require a college degree.)
  • TRADE SCHOOL / CERTIFICATION (Careers that typically require trade school, technical training, certification, apprenticeship, or specialized education.)
  • HIGH SCHOOL / ENTREPRENEURSHIP (Careers that can be entered with a high school education, on-the-job training, or through entrepreneurship.)

We want students to see that every pathway has value-and that success can be found in many different forms. Each speaker will have approximately five minutes to introduce students to their career. Speakers will be given a standardized set of questions to help guide their presentation.

Q&A AND CAREER CONNECTION

After the 12 speakers have presented, students, parents, and presenters will gather for approximately 45 minutes of light refreshments and informal conversation.

This will give students the opportunity to:

  • Ask follow-up questions
  • Meet presenters personally
  • Learn more about careers that caught their interest
  • Make connections with professionals
  • Discuss education and training pathways

This informal portion is an important part of the symposium because a five-minute presentation may spark an interest that leads to a much deeper conversation.

WHY THIS MATTERS

College is a wonderful pathway for some students-but it isn’t the only pathway to success. Trades are valuable. Certifications are valuable. Entrepreneurship is valuable. College is valuable. Careers are worthwhile in their various forms. We want our students to leave understanding that their future does not have to fit into one predetermined mold. By meeting real people who have taken different paths, students can begin to see possibilities they may never have considered.

SUCCESS HAS MANY PATHS.

ACHEV FIRST!

My goal is to utilize the incredible experience and diversity already present within the ACHEV community before reaching outside of our group. If you have a career that fits one of the three categories above-or if you know someone within ACHEV who would be a great speaker-we would love to hear from you!

If you are unable to participate as a speaker but would like to help make the event a success, please sign up to bring light refreshments on the sign-up sheet. This is a great way to contribute!
