FREEDOM
Freedom tends to be hard earned and easily lost. When the homeschool movement began in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, it was most certainly hard earned. Thankfully, we currently enjoy wonderful freedom to homeschool, by the grace of God, but from the beginning, there have been challenges, and challenges keep coming.
We must remain vigilant if we are to retain our current freedom to choose private home education in California. You can help! The time-tested most effective way to do this is to pray, and be connected. We must be connected to something bigger than we are, something that stays up on current events, that has experience, expertise, and godly conviction.
We are so very fortunate to have Christian organizations that possess all of these qualities, and they all work together to promote Christian private home education – the right to choose not be under public school authority. Let me introduce you to CHEA, FPM, HSLDA and NHERI. We need these groups and they need us. They are membership and donation supported non-profits that have been fighting the good fight for decades.
Please consider joining and/or sending a donation to help these groups thrive. Thank you!
CHEA: Christian Home Educators Association of California was founded in 1983. Their website is packed with incredible resources for homeschool families, and for homeschool groups such as ACHEV. Due to the popularity of public school programs, and the current perceived security of our freedom to homeschool these last few years, their financial base has been reduced. In order to continue to provide their current level of support, they need us to respond through membership and donations. Please visit cheaofca.org to read more about how CHEA can support you, and learn how you can support CHEA through membership and/or donation.
FPM: Family Protection Ministries is the Christian ministry also founded in the early 1980’s that does the incredible work of scanning every piece of legislation for anything that would undermine parental rights, especially pertaining to private home education. Over the decades, they have caught and addressed countless bills, working to add or change wording when possible, and to alert CHEA and other groups when bills need to be actively opposed. There is so much more. Please visit fpmca.org to read more. They have a very small, efficient staff, and rely solely on donations for support.
HSLDA: Home School Legal Defense Association began in California in 1983. It has since become worldwide! This ministry has a seasoned team of lawyers that provide legal advice, defend member families as needed, and fight dangerous legislation across the nation and world. They also have incredible practical resources for home educators, such as a transcript service. Membership is highly recommended. ACHEV is a discount group with HSLDA. If you’d like to join HSLDA or use our discount when you renew, please send an email to achevmail@gmail.com to request our HSLDA discount member number. HSLDA is membership and donation funded. Please visit hslda.org for more information.
NHERI: National Home Education Research Institute specializes in research, statistics, and information on home education, which is a critical component in defending our freedoms. Often those most hostile to parental rights and private home education argue that public school oversight is needed to ensure child safety and quality educational results. Solid research is crucial to showing the truth and protecting our freedom. NHERI partners with CHEA to help families easily participate in this much-needed research. NHERI is donation funded. To learn more visit nheri.org.
These groups work tirelessly to defend your right to direct the education of your children without public school oversight. Thank you for taking time to read more about each of them.
Please pray about joining CHEA, especially, as they are right here in our home state, on the forefront. They are the only Christian state group. They are the best source of accurate, up-to-date information on home education in our state, working with these other groups closely. We want them able to thrive and continue with their good work.
We know opposition to home education is not new, and more opposition is sure to come. We need to remain vigilant, pray fervently, and keep our warrior organizations strong and ready. Thank you!
